Campaign Description
Over the past 10 years Puerto Rico's economy fell prey to the hands of corporations and vultures that saw an opportunity to push austerity measures and a neoliberal agenda after decades of neglect and corruption from local and federal governments and a long history of colonialism. This agenda has pushed hundreds of thousands off the island, closed hundreds of schools, taken labor rights and good union jobs from many and has left the island with an unemployment rate of 13% and 45% of population living under the poverty line. This situation has all been exacerbated by the impact of hurricane María on September 20 of 2017.
Currently, in the diaspora, groups have worked to advocate for the for legislation and policies that protect and support the Puerto Rican people and against the corporate players that have pushed these policies in Puerto Rico and the US. This is a temporary position that may be extended, funding permitting.
Job Description
The Puerto Rico Organizing Coordinator would act as a coordinator and developer of shared campaigns in the US that would support relief and community led rebuilding efforts in the island and the relocation and political empowerment of Puerto Rican coming to the US. Specifically, the role of the Organizing Coordinator would be:
Coordinate campaigns and direct action in the US and Puerto Rico – in conjunction with local organizations and organizing efforts in PR:
Campaign and organizational development;
Organizing skill development;
Base-building support;
Connect other Puerto Rican groups to debt and recovery campaigns, as well as coordinating the development of shared campaigns around Puerto Rico that include:
Corporate accountability;
Hurricane relief and recovery;
US-PR policies;
Navigate local and organizational politics to develop relationships, partnerships and coalitions that build long term power on the island and in the diaspora;
Coordinating research that can underpin these shared campaigns and inform policy goals;
Support fundraising efforts to maintain long term organizing in the US and the Diaspora
Work with research and digital campaign teams to drive issue education and broad-based advocacy
Requirements
We believe the following are requirements the person needs to be successful:
At least 4-7 of experience doing community or labor organizing or similar work;
Experience with policy campaigns around debt relief, corporate accountability, immigration, colonialism among others;
Belief that community organizing is a powerful and effective tool to make change;
The ability to move people to action;
A strong desire to listen and develop others' leadership;
An understanding of the political and organizational landscape of Puerto Rico and the diaspora;
The ability to communicate both written and verbally in Spanish and English;
The ability to work on your own in flexible and potentially fast paced circumstances.
Willing to travel 50% of the time to the CPD network affiliates.
Benefits and Salary
Competitive salary depending on relevant work experience, education, and other factors. CPD offers a generous benefit package including health insurance and 401K. This is a temporary position that may be extended, funding permitting.
