Senior Writer

EMILY's List, the nation's largest financial resource for women candidates, is in search of a Senior Writer to join our Communications team.  Throughout our 29 year history, EMILY's List has recruited and trained over 9,000 women to run, worked to elect over 100 pro-choice Democratic women to the House, 19 to the Senate, 11 governors, and over five hundred women to state and local office. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List helped elect 97% of the Democratic women of color in Congress, including every single Latina, African American, and Asian American Democratic woman currently serving.

Principal Responsibilities

The Senior Writer helps to elect pro-choice Democratic women by providing strategic communications support to the President, Senior Leadership Team and EMILY's List candidates.  The Senior Writer provides the voice for EMILY's List's President and others by writing speeches, talking points, scripts, op-eds and other communications tools as needed.  S/he is a proven leader in helping executives succeed with external communications that position them as thought leaders and engage their audiences.

Specific Duties

·         Own all speeches, remarks, op-eds, conversation guides, and talking points for EMILY's List organization, President, and additional staff as needed;
·         Work with candidates as needed to draft stump speeches, tough Q&A, and campaign message frames;
·         Prepare message briefings for EMILY's List principals for interviews and on-the-record work; prep and staff principals as needed for media interaction and public speaking events;
·         Provide organization-wide talking points for campaigns and issues as needed;
·         Proactively find opportunities to integrate issue and political realities into appearances and messaging;
·         Maintain a strong set of core materials (facts, statistics, etc.) about EMILY's List, our work and our candidates, past and present;
·         Assist with any other assignments and tasks as requested by the Communications Department;
·         Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

  • 5-7 years experience in a writing or speechwriting capacity;
  • Experience in politics and/or advocacy, preferably in a communications/research environment;
  • Excellent creative writing skills and attention to detail;
  • Strong research and organizational skills;
  • Team player with strong inter-personal skills, including experience working with senior executives;
  • Ability to write and produce accurately and extremely quickly during high-volume, fast-paced periods;
  • Ability to collaborate across departments and work well with different personalities;
  • Willingness to travel;
  • Pro-active self-starter with a hunger to expand the EMILY's List community, win races, and build a sustainable, progressive America.
