About the Position:

Fundamental to increasing power for working people in this country is building power and testing our theories in the states and cities. To bring about the scale of change we believe in, our union must be coordinated in its strategy, program, investments and implementation.

The State Project Director coordinates the planning and implementation process within the State to win pro-worker policies and to create the conditions for federal intervention in 2020 and beyond that benefits workers, worker organizations and reduces income inequality.  S/he coordinates with the International Union and the SEIU local leaders, the State Council Director and other campaigns on their joint work around political and issue campaigns and projects, with the focus of building a sustainable progressive infrastructure in order to win for working people.

Strategies include:
  • Build a comprehensive strategy and infrastructure on the state or local level to achieve long-term gains.
  • Coordinate our strength and resources, both within and across state to win short-term offensive victories and build long-term, sustained power.
  • Work with other Unions and strategic partners to build a joint strategy and progressive infrastructure
  • Support and inspire workers and community members to create conditions for worker organizing around issues of justice including increased wages, Medicaid expansion, and immigrant rights.

Specific Responsibilities:
  • Leads and supports field staff in the campaign to plan and achieve goals.  Assures integration of the work with local unions, community organizations, and other SEIU departments.
  • Oversees staff development program for the campaign staff, evaluates the needs of the campaign, implements the program including training leads and tracking progress.
  •  Reports on progress of the campaign regularly.
  • Coordinate the Management of multiple state and local level issue campaigns and budgets.   
  • Coordinate the development of coalitions and joint work with strategic allies and partners.
  • Establish campaign budget with measurable goals and outcomes, to be evaluated on a regular basis.
  • Act as liaison between the state operation and the international union.
  • Performs other duties as required in support of the program.

Direction and Decision Making:

The State Project Director must be able to work independently and effectively represent the Union.  This position reports to the State Council Director.


Education and Experience:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university in a related field or equivalent formal training including five (5) years of supervisory experience or a combination of education and experience that would provide for the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Strong knowledge and experience in labor organizing and related labor-advocacy work
  • Knowledge of organizing and organizational management
  • Ability to execute campaign goals and objectives, to work effectively with local leaders, and carry out required objectives
  • Extensive experience directing organizing campaigns,developing strategy, managing staff, and coordinating resources
  • Demonstrated experience working independently in complex political situations
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures
  • Ability to handle multiple "priority" projects and meet established timelines
  • Ability to use personal computer and a Microsoft Office programs.


Physical Requirements:

Work in the field and travel is required

Salary Range:

The position offers a competitive salary and benefit package. Specific salary will be commensurate with experience.
