Summary
New Era Colorado seeks a Development Director to lead all fundraising operations and stakeholder relationship building. This position in based in Denver, Colorado. Salary ranges between $35,000-$45,000 and is commensurate with experience. The position also includes health insurance and regional public transportation benefits.
New Era's revenue development relies on a combination of grant-writing and foundation support, major gifts of $500 and up, a robust monthly membership program, business revenue and in-kind donations, and small-dollar donations of less than $500 through numerous events throughout the year, mailings and online fundraising campaigns.
Job Activities
Planning & Management
- Strategically develop, manage, and implement an annual fundraising plan and development budget
- Develop calendars and action plans for various fundraising streams and goals
- Monitor and evaluate all fundraising activities to ensure that fundraising goals are being achieved
- Monitor trends in the community or region and adapt fundraising strategies as necessary
- Manage a Development Coordinator who executes portions of the annual fundraising plan
- Manage the Executive Director's time spent on fundraising efforts such as major donor cultivation, stakeholder outreach, etc.
- Manage the Board of Directors fundraising efforts, track progress & check-in with the board members regularly
- Develop and maintain ongoing relationships with major donors and prospects
- Meet with current and prospective donors to cultivate major gifts
- Build relationships with community stakeholders to advance the mission and fundraising goals of the organization
- Manage the maintenance of detailed records of all former, current, and prospective major donors in the organization's database
- Direct all donor acknowledgement, including drafting and generating thank you letters & materials
- Lead all grant-writing efforts, including the development of grants, materials, and reports
- Direct research on foundation prospects conducted by the Development Coordinator and/or interns
- Maintain relationships with current foundation grantors while cultivating relationships with prospective foundations and program officers
- Oversee and provide support for the Development Coordinator's managing of a robust monthly member program
- Assist the Development Coordinator in developing an annual monthly membership program plan and asssist with management of the program
- Plan, manage and execute, with the support of development staff and volunteers, New Era events aimed at raising major gifts, including but not limited to an annual fundraising event and house parties
- Manage the Development Coordinator's planning and execution of small-dollar fundraising events
- Direct the development of online & printed promotional materials, such as New Era's annual report
- Establish solid, mutually-beneficial relationships on behalf of New Era with community leaders and various other stakeholders
- Assist and support New Era's general programs at times, including communications, voter engagement, and policy work
- Manage and delegate tasks to volunteer teams and/or interns for increased capacity when planning events and large projects
Qualifications
Previous fundraising and/or political experience
- Minimum of 2 years of previous fundraising experience at a nonprofit or electoral campaign or 3 years of political or progressive non-profit experience is required.
- The ideal candidate is a friendly, confident, poised speaker, and can adapt well to any audience. The Development Director must possess strong speaking and presentation skills.
- The Development Director must be able to think strategically about fundraising at New Era. The ideal candidate must have an inquisitive mind that's always analyzing processes and planning improvements, and is able to develop strategic fundraising goals and tactics for New Era.
- The Development Director will be juggling and managing multiple projects at one time. The ideal candidate is able to develop internal systems to keep development projects and the development team organized.
- The ideal candidate is a proficient, tactical as well as witty writer that is able to wear a variety of different writing "hats," when writing pieces such as, but not limited to: grant proposals, compelling fundraising emails and lively and humorous event pitches.
- The ideal candidate presents a strong commitment and passion for New Era's mission in order to effectively promote and advance the goals of New Era Colorado.
- The Development Director is able to thrive in their role at New Era even when working long and nontraditional hours, and must be able to manage time effectively when working such hours.
Knowledge of Colorado politics and the progressive nonprofit infrastructure
- The ideal candidate is familiar with the Colorado political landscape and progressive nonprofit infrastructure, and already has relationships with key stakeholders in this sphere.
- The ideal candidate has experience managing other staff and has a proven track record of communicating effectively and maintaining positive working relationships with staff they have managed.
- The ideal candidate has working knowledge of and experience with NGP/EveryAction
