Chief Counsel

SEIU Local 1000, a progressive public sector labor union is seeking a Chief Counsel to work in Sacramento, CA. We represent 95,000 California state employees in nine different bargaining units. We negotiate and enforce a complex contract that ensures good working conditions, fair wages and secure health care and retirement benefits.
The Chief Counsel is responsible for coordinating and directing the work of the Legal Department. The Chief Counsel oversees and performs a wide variety of complex legal work on behalf of Local 1000 and its members. The duties include, but are not limited to the following:
- Handle the most complex legal matters.
- Assist the Talent Management Department with personnel issues.
- Advise and represent the organization with internal staff union matters, including collective bargaining and arbitrations.
- Advise senior management regarding legal matters, including but not limited to the Union policy file, collective bargaining, personnel issues, and application of laws to Union governance.
- Exercise professional and strategic judgment in the development of complex or significant legal theories to be pursued or strategies to be utilized by the organization.
- Document the achievement of Legal Department goals, strategies and/or directives, analyze the results, and make reports or recommendations for improvement.
- Coordinate and direct the work of ten-twelve staff attorneys and support staff.
- Demonstrate the ability to maintain positive working relationships with other employees and members, and demonstrate a commitment to the mission, policies and directives of the organization.
- Provide leadership, mentoring and training in one or more substantive areas of law to other staff attorneys as applicable, on either a regional or statewide basis.
- Work long, irregular hours.
- Other duties as assigned.
ELIGIBILITY:
Education: Graduation from an accredited law school. Accredited means accredited by the American Bar Association or the State Bar of California.
Experience:
- At least five (5) years of responsible and continuous full-time experience in the practice of law;
- At least two (2) years of responsibility for and supervision of at least one (1) practicing attorney and/or a distinct legal office;
- At least five (5) years of experience in labor and/or employment law; and
- Knowledge of corporations law, a plus.
Other: Active membership in the State Bar of California. Possession of a valid California driver's license, automobile and appropriate insurance.
