DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR

MoveOn is seeking a senior-level Development Director to explore new fundraising opportunities from members and allies. This a new position that will spearhead the research, planning and execution of programs to cultivate middle donors, major donors, foundations and bequests. The right person for this role will be a creative leader and development professional with an entrepreneurial streak and a commitment to progressive values. MoveOn does not accept funding from corporations or from government entities, and prioritizes support from members. The Development Director will be a key leader within the organization, and will help drive the expansion MoveOn's funding base and network of supporters.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and execute an annual fundraising plan for middle donors, major donors, foundations and bequests
  • Conduct research, prospecting, and application to multiple donor sources
  • Develop and maintain ongoing relationships with major donors and prospects
  • Secure financial support from individuals and foundations
  • Create a MoveOn development team comprised of key vendors and staff
  • Manage the implementation of a development tracking database and oversee data entry and gift processing
  • Create and execute a strategy for a large sustained base of annual individual donors
  • Develop and manage a major donor stewardship plan
  • Oversee organization of special events as needed
  • Develop proposals and track reports for all foundation and individual fundraising

Required skills and experience:

  • Proven success in development for political campaigns, large nonprofits or membership organizations
  • Demonstrated ability to lead ambitious and innovative fundraising campaigns that generate significant donations from individuals and foundations
  • Skilled in creating powerful, compelling written and oral communications for fundraising
  • Experience in planning, leading, and managing development projects, including working collaboratively with others to reach common goals, and reporting on progress to senior managers/board of directors
  • Able to navigate complex donor environments with judgment, sound strategic thinking, and tactical skill
  • Experience and credibility when presenting materials to external audiences
  • Self-directed, motivated, and able to execute independently at a high level
  • Deep experience working with diverse constituencies, and commitment to expanding the diversity of MoveOn's base of members and supporters
  • Ability to be effective in an organization whose staff work remotely

Location: Position can be based anywhere in the US. May require some travel.

Salary and benefits: Competitive salary including benefits such as 100% employer-paid health and dental insurance for all staff and their children, 4 weeks vacation time accrued per year, paid sick time, and reimbursement of personal office expenses.
