Title: Organizing Fellow

Organizing Fellow

Portland, OR

Longview, WA

For over 35 years, Greenpeace has been inspiring and mobilizing people all over the world to work toward a more green and peaceful planet. We are a leading independent environmental organization that utilizes action, cutting-edge research and creative communications to protect the Earth. We expose global environmental problems and promote the solutions that are essential to a green and peaceful future. We investigate, document and expose environmental destruction in a peaceful manner and promote open, informed debate about society's environmental choices. To ensure our independence we do not accept donations from corporations or governments.

Purpose of the Position:

Spend six months taking on some of the Northwest's biggest challenges and working with the world's best-known environmental activist organization!

The Pacific Northwest is a diverse bio-region, renowned for its majestic mountains, lush forests, the Columbia River, salmon and fragile ecosystems enjoyed by many. Now, communities across the region face the threats of dirty coal export by rail and barge, pushed by desperate coal companies that would transport the toxic fossil fuel through our neighborhoods at the expense of the environment and climate. Companies like the Millennium Bulk Logistics have a dirty plan for Longview and the Pacific Northwest: to ship up to 44 million tons of coal per year through the area spilling coal dust filled with mercury and heavy metals, polluting our clean air and water, and jeopardizing the health of our communities. That's why Greenpeace is working with volunteers, the Power Past Coal coalition and local groups to stop coal exports.

This position will work closely with the Portland-based Field Organizer to support campaign work to expose the coal companies behind the proposal and help to build people-powered opposition in Longview, WA and Portland, OR. Much of work will be developing community building and mobilization strategies with local volunteer teams, organizing students in key regions, managing our online organizing platform, planning events and trainings, and building an engaged network of leader and activists taking action on the campaigns.

We're looking for someone who is enthusiastic, self-motivated, extremely organized, and ready to help out with any task, large or small. Bilingual in Spanish a plus but not required

Responsibilities:

Working with new and existing volunteer teams at many levels

Coordinating Door-to-Door informational canvasses and phone banking by volunteers

Benefits:

Salary: $10/ hour, benefits not included. 40 hours/week.

Commitment to Diversity:

Greenpeace challenges the systems of power and privilege that destroy the environment and place disproportionate burdens on vulnerable communities. As Greenpeace, we know from nature that diversity is essential to life on the planet and success in our organization. We welcome, value and rely on a diversity of people, cultural experiences and perspectives. We learn from one another. Through our campaigning, we create solutions that promote environmental sustainability rooted in social justice.
