Position Summary: 
Leadership for Educational Equity seeks a collaborative, entrepreneurial and highly motivated Director of Elected Leadership Communications to help develop and execute strategies aimed to develop members interested in running for elected leadership positions to have a greater impact on education.
 
Reporting directly to the Senior Director of Communications, and working closely with the Elected Leadership team, the ideal candidate for this new role will have a proven ability to manage projects, communicate with teams, and coach members simultaneously, while developing and executing plans to meet LEE goals. They should have the demonstrated ability to design customized media strategies, experience coaching leaders/candidates running for office, and deep experience in media execution to educate members and ensure they are prepared to communicate their vision in the communities they serve.

Position Location: Chicago, IL preferred; Denver, CO; Washington, DC; New York City possible

Responsibilities:

  • Create and manage a program that supports member candidates to develop strong messaging and communications as they seek elected office across the country
  • Support, coach, and train LEE staff to be more effective in integrating earned media and communications plans into member campaigns and leadership development
  • Create and implement a program to support, coach, and train members in their leadership development as it relates to effective messaging and communications, including media strategy development and engagement
  • Work closely with Director of Digital Engagement and digital campaigns staff to leverage internal assets to meet goals and encourage best practice sharing among LEE teams in regards to communications tools and assets
  • Provide ongoing strategy and program evaluation to continuously improve support to our members
  • Advise Vice President of Elected Leadership and Communications team  on member communications that will contribute to LEE's overall mission 
  • Consistently produce high quality internal/external, strategic and editorial communications content including media outreach tools; customized member engagement messaging; and traditional, digital and social media outreach materials
  • Develop standards, processes, metrics and best practices to drive decisions that will increase member engagement and media outreach success
  • Contribute to communications success and growth by introducing new capabilities and business processes, building networks of industry contacts and participating in relevant professional organizations
Requirements, Skills, Knowledge, Abilities & Competencies
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Minimum of 5 years work experience with communications and press, leading effective communications programs
  • Minimum of 4 cycles of experience with electoral campaigns and/or advocacy campaigns
  • Experience developing strategic communications for campaigns or advocacy efforts
  • Experience with digital engagement strategies such as social media and email platforms
  • Strong oral, written and interpersonal skills
  • Highly organized, able to handle multiple and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Exceptional project management skills and ability to work independently and function effectively in a team environment
  • Entrepreneurial and ability to easily adapt to innovations and changes in policies and procedures
  • Ability to self motivate, manage a small team remotely, and collaborate with others to achieve team impact
