[jobsthatareLEFT] Director of Analytics at the Analyst Institute; DC

Big job opening up at Analyst Institute -- Director of Analytics, running the heart of our operations. Perhaps right for someone on this list?

Job description on our website here, and also below.

Top Five Reasons to Work at the Analyst Institute

The Analyst Institute helps progressive changemakers win big fights, by figuring out what really works in politics and social justice organizing. We're a great team to join. Here's why.

1. You'll have impact, and know it.  The Analyst Institute may be a rigorous research institute, but we don't care about knowledge for its own sake. We're in a privileged position between data analytics and the frontlines, and we combine the best of both to have real world impact.

2. Learn lots, and quickly.  The Analyst Institute runs dozens of research projects at a time, and the Director of Analytics will touch all those projects. So you'll get to drink from a firehose of learnings, and build your expertise in the field.

3. Center of a powerful hub.  In addition to doing our own original research, we convene a powerful community of progressive innovators fighting the good fight alongside us. So you'll have a first-hand view of the latest developments in the field.

4. Get to know the progressive movement.  From racial justice to labor to the environment to LGBT rights to electoral campaigns and everything in between, you'll have broad of exposure to many progressive issues and campaigns. If you're not a one issue person, you'll feel at home here.

5. Brilliant coworkers who have your back.  We're not a huge team, but we're a strong team. We're all in this for the same reason – to make progressive change – so we build each other up, support each other, and put our mission above our egos. We're friendly nerds.

Right now, we're looking for a Director of Analytics, a senior leadership role, to run our Analytics team. The Director of Analytics manages the heart of what we do at AI -- data analysis of field experiments and building models. She or he will be responsible for a mix of personnel management, project management, technical innovation and community education:

-> You'll be responsible for managing a team of talented analysts in AI's fast paced environment, while making sure that work is always high quality. A candidate with a proven ability to mentor new or junior employees and develop them professionally will stand out.

-> You'll need to have a passion for managing complex projects, hitting deadlines and solving tricky problems on the fly. If you are someone who gets a rush from delivering a really tough project flawlessly and on schedule, this will be a satisfying job for you.

-> You'll also be the in-house technical expert and engineer. You'll develop and administer the infrastructure that keeps AI up and running, and write and edit software to build statistical models. You'll need a strong background in quantitative analysis, ideally but not necessarily with data from field experiments. You should be familiar with data management in various forms and contexts: tracking a project with Git, pulling data from a relational database, cleaning and loading a multi-gigabyte data file, and so on.

-> The final component of this position is to spread knowledge about data analysis and experimental methods, within AI and in the progressive data community at large, through trainings, reports, presentations and working groups. You'll actively generate novel experimental designs and supervise individual experiments.

Qualifications:

-> A proven ability to manage a small, close knit team under tight deadlines.

-> Excellent analytical skills. You should be able to learn new skills, and learn to analyze new types of projects, as needed, and to communicate your learnings to others in writing.

-> Strong project management skills. With dozens of projects underway at once, you will thrive if you're a good juggler and can prioritize your work effectively.

-> Mastery of either or both of R (preferred) or Stata. We use both for randomizing and analyzing projects, and use R for model building.

-> Knowledge of version control systems (we use Git).

-> Passion for progressive politics is necessary; experience with political campaigns or issue organizing is a big plus.

Preferred experience:

-> Experience designing or implementing field experiments (academic or professional).

-> Experience with predictive analytics and machine learning techniques.

-> Fluency in SQL and familiarity with relational databases (Vertica, PostgreSQL, MySQL, etc).

-> Scripting or software development experience in high-level programming languages (Python, Ruby, etc).

-> Linux systems administration experience and knowledge of Unix tools.

-> A background in political science or other social sciences is helpful but isn't mandatory.

Location:  Washington D.C., near McPherson Square
