GOVERNMENT RELATIONS – INTERNSHIP (2015-2016)

 

Washington, D.C.

 

Summary: Service Employees International Union (SEIU), the nation's fastest-growing labor organization representing more than 2 million workers, is seeking a full-time intern in the Washington, D.C. office's Government Relations (GR) Department. SEIU represents a variety of workers, but the majority of our members are health care workers (nurses, home health providers), property service workers (janitors, security guards) and public workers (state employees). SEIU offers a fast-paced, energetic and rewarding work environment that fosters the development of a broad range of skills.

 

SEIU's GR Department is committed to ensuring that our members have a voice in the legislative and regulatory processes. From working the halls of Congress to keeping up with the White House and Executive Branch Agencies, in addition to supporting our local unions in their relationships with state and local government officials, GR works on policies that impact the daily lives of our members. Some of our main areas of work are protecting vital public services, promoting of quality and affordable health care, and supporting working people in the fight for a living wage.


GR team members research and draft policy, enable members to lobby their elected officials, and work with coalition partners to maximize our impact in powerful and innovative ways. Our portfolio is an ever-changing landscape of work, stretching from DC to statehouses across the country. In partnership with SEIU's other departments, GR staff continue to build new relationships and strengthen existing ones across the political spectrum and on all levels of government with the singular goal of building a new American Dream for our members, their families, and all working people.


Our interns have the opportunity to work on substantive projects within various teams of the GR Department.

Primary Responsibilities: Assist SEIU Government Relations Department staff in coordinating program logistics, political/legislative research, preparing reports and other documents, work on issues campaigns, drafting internal and external communications, data compilation and management, and various administrative duties.  During this academic year, work on political issues and the 2016 election cycle will increase throughout the duration.


Required Qualifications:
•    Current enrollment at a University (undergraduate or graduate level) – this opportunity is open to students only
•    Interest in labor and progressive politics
•    Excellent oral and written communication skills

•    Complete working knowledge of MSOffice Suite and Google mail and web-based applications

•    Familiarity with, and understanding of, legislative processes at the federal, state, and/or local levels

•    Research and analytical skills, particularly through use of Internet searches and tools such as Lexis/Nexus and CQ/Roll Call

•    Ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines
•    Ability to analyze data and make sound, logical conclusions
•    Ability to work well in groups and individually

•    Must be proactive and show initiative in a fast-paced environment

 

Interns will work in SEIU's Government Relations Department in Washington, DC (Dupont Circle) and will receive a stipend. Full-time interns will work a maximum of 35 hours per week; part-time academic year interns will work a minimum of 20 hours per week.
