About the Black Organizing Project:

The Black Organizing Project is a Black member-led community organization working for racial, social, and economic justice through grassroots organizing and community-building in Oakland, California.

Our vision is to build a strong bottom up organization of Black people that will:

  • Craft alternative models and institutions that will advance our vision of racial and economic justice
  • Rebuild the spirit and foundation of our community
  • Exercise political and economic power
  • Act to win real systematic change
  • Transform the lives of Black people
  • Embody the spirit that has sustained the Black community

Community Organizer Overview

The Organizer is responsible for building a base of community members that are actively engaged in our campaign, program work and strategic coalitions. S/he will advance the work of the Bettering Our School System (BOSS) campaign and will identify/ inspire students and parents to get in involved in BOP as leaders in their community and school.

The Community Organizer will work extensively in the field with students, parents and coalition partners to build a powerful base of members. S/he will also coordinate meetings, rallies, actions and engage members in advancing the goals in the BOSS campaign.

BOP provides an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated and creative individual who wants to have an impact on changing the conditions of Black folks through community organizing in Oakland and the East Bay. The position requires a flexible schedule with some nights and weekends as needed. The Community Organizer reports the Organizing Director.

BOSS Campaign:

  • Develop and recruit organizing committee members
  • Work with core leaders on campaign strategy, implementation, negotiations and actions
  • Maintain systems of tracking outreach, target areas and follow up
  • Oversee database as it relates to organizing contacts and generating relevant reports
  • Recruit community members to participate in the campaign
  • Along with leaders, represent BOP to media and outside agencies
  • Support Parent Leadership Committee

Youth Programs:

  • Support youth leaders to participate on the organizing committee
  • Facilitate school site classes

Membership/Leadership Development:

  • Recruit new members
  • Identify and support leadership development opportunities for members
  • Oversee processing members

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Document qualitative and quantitative data related to programs
  • Provide weekly reports to the Organizing Director

Conditions

Full-time, exempt at-will position, with benefits with 30 day probationary period

Salary: (depending on experience), plus benefits

I. Please Review Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 1 years of experience in community, labor or other relevant grassroots organizing
  • Demonstrated success in growing and developing an organized base of members, constituents or community members
  • Team player attitude
  • Excellent verbal and written skills
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerbase, Google Docs and Power Point 
  • Flexibility to work on weekends and evenings as necessary
  • Willingness to travel as necessary
  • Being From Oakland or graduating from an Oakland school is a PLUS
  • Valid drivers license and reliable transportation required
