Safer Chemicals Advocacy Fellow
- Job Description
The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is a non-profit national environmental advocacy organization with more than 2.4 million members and online activists. We have offices in New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Bozeman, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Beijing. Our staff includes nearly 500 attorneys, scientists, policy analysts and educators working to protect the environment and public health through advocacy and education.
NRDC is now accepting applications for a full-time, limited-term Safer Chemicals Advocacy Fellow. The Policy Advocate will work with NRDC's Health Program, a diverse team of lawyers, policy specialists and scientists, to address public health threats from toxics in our food supply, drinking water, and the environment. The position will be located in Washington, DC or San Francisco.
NRDC is seeking a Safer Chemicals Advocacy Fellow to help run private-sector focused campaigns to reduce toxic chemicals in consumer products and food. The Fellow will work with NRDC's Health Program staff, medical and health organizations, grassroots groups, and other coalition allies to pressure key producers and retailers to move towards less-toxic alternatives in their food and consumer product supply chain. The Fellow will also advocate for EPA, FDA, the Consumer Product Safety Commission and possibly other government entities to use their authorities to address chemicals in food and consumer products. This is a two-year position.
Responsibilities:
- Work as an integrated part of NRDC's health, communications, and policy advocacy teams.
- Develop and execute a toxics campaign strategy aimed at removing high-priority toxic chemical threats in retail products and foods by pressuring retailers and manufacturers to clean up their supply chain.
- Work with Health program, litigation team members, and allies to apply pressure on FDA to remove priority toxic chemicals from the food supply, and on EPA and CPSC and possibly other agencies to take action on toxic chemicals in consumer products.
- Work with Health program staff, academic experts, and allied groups to explore a product testing campaign to build consumer pressure on branded products.
- Serve as a spokesperson for NRDC with companies, reporters, government officials, and coalition partners.
- Work in concert with key coalitions, health and medical groups, grassroots organizations, and other allies to focus the campaign, have clear demands, and apply maximum pressure on companies selling and manufacturing products containing toxic chemicals.
Qualifications:
- A genuine interest in NRDC's mission.
- 3-5 years of demonstrated success in campaigning and policy advocacy; campaigns focused on the private sector strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated success working collaboratively and cooperatively with others, other departments within an organization and with other organizations and entities.
- Demonstrated success building, cultivating and stewarding new relationships leading to measurable results.
- Demonstrated analytical skills and the ability to problem solve.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- An understanding and ability to succeed in the fast-paced, results-driven setting of an advocacy organization.
- Experience working in close partnership with a team of experts.
- A strategic thinker; able to see the "big picture", deliver on current goals and objectives, and plan for the future.
- An understanding of digital communication tools. Technologically savvy.
- Strong writing and oral advocacy skills are a must.
- Experience working with federal agencies a plus.
- Ability to cultivate strong and positive working relationships at every level—a collaborative colleague.
- Ability to develop, articulate, build consensus around, and execute a strategy.
