Advocate for Clean Water
Environment America seeks a campaigner to join our team and work with our staff to build momentum and expand support for our Clean Water for America program. Responsibilities include coalition-building, generating media and visibility, field organizing, fundraising, and helping us build our team.
Environment America is a national grassroots advocacy organization tackling today's toughest environmental problems. Working with our state affiliates and members across the country we use creative strategies, effective tactics, grit and determination to win positive change for our environment and our families' health. That's how we helped bring millions of people together with thousands of constituency groups, coalition partners and elected officials to push the EPA to propose new rules to close loopholes in the Clean Water Act despite opposition from the Farm Bureau, Home Builders and other powerful interests.
From the Great Lakes to the Colorado River, from Puget Sound to the Chesapeake Bay, America's rivers, streams, lakes and other waters are where we go to swim, fish, canoe, kayak or just enjoy the scenery. They supply us with clean drinking water. The Advocate for our Clean Water campaign will be a key part of our national efforts to protect America's waterways.
The Clean Water Advocate's Role:
Coalition building: Cultivating relationships with diverse and powerful allies and expanding the constituencies supporting our efforts. We will be looking to build a robust coalition to have key allies actively engaged in our efforts —attending events, executing joint media events, etc.
Grassroots mobilization: Mobilize citizens in support of our campaigns both on and offline. Providing compelling information and opportunities for action to our members and the general public will be a critical component of winning our campaigns.
Media and visibility: Getting the word out far and wide, in the media and through other channels is a critical part of our work. By elevating the issue in the public debate, we can better educate and motivate our supporters and hold decision-makers accountable. Opportunities for visibility will include releasing reports, writing and developing materials, including press releases, developing talking points, op-eds, and letters to the editor, as well as social media materials and media outreach. The Program Coordinator will also be responsible for representing the organization at various conferences, on panels, etc.
Program and Policy Development: Participate in policy development, engage in research, and create messaging for our clean water program. Help determine where our field resources will be most effective.
Mobilizing the Public: Providing compelling information and opportunities for action to our members and the general public—which will be a critical component of winning our clean water campaigns.
Fundraising: Write grant proposals, build relationships with foundation staff, and meet with major donors, all to bring more resources to our campaigns. Work with our citizen outreach and on-line staff to build and develop a strong membership base to sustain our work.
Recruiting and Developing Staff: Recruit new staff, new interns and new volunteers to increase our impact and build more power.
Qualifications: Candidates must have at least 4 years of relevant professional experience. Qualified candidates will have a demonstrated commitment to environmental issues and to citizen-based social change as well as a track record of leadership. We're looking for goal-driven and results-oriented individuals who have excellent verbal, writing and analytical skills, the ability to speak persuasively in a charged atmosphere, and enthusiasm for the work.
Salary & Benefits:
Salary for this position is commensurate with relevant professional experience and/or advanced degrees. Environment America offers a competitive benefits package. Eligible staff receive paid holidays, sick days, and vacation days; and the opportunity to enroll in our group health care, college and graduate loan assistance, and 401(k) programs.
