Emerge America and the Emerge affiliates share one mission: To increase the number of Democratic women leaders from diverse backgrounds in public office through recruitment, training, and providing a powerful network. As the national umbrella organization, Emerge America's role is to:
- Elevate the importance of electing more Democratic women at every level of the ballot.
- Empower our current alumnae and affiliates with support and capacity-building.
- Expand our impact by replicating our success in new states.
Emerge America is actively recruiting for a dynamic leader to help grow a national communications plan that benefits both Emerge America and its 16 affiliates. The Emerge America Communications Director will report directly to the President and is a full-time position.
Responsibilities:
- Work with the President to develop and implement a strategic communications plan for Emerge America;
- Develop a comprehensive series of stories about Emerge candidates, network, training curriculum, successes, and supporters;
- Generate earned media coverage of Emerge through proactive planning, rapid response and maintaining a pitch grid;
- Write press releases, statements, media advisories, talking points, columns, and remarks for Emerge America President;
- Schedule media interviews and provide appropriate background information to the President and/or surrogates for all media events;
- Travel with and staff the Emerge America President and/or other leadership to media events as needed;
- Field and respond to all media inquiries and oversee comprehensive media tracking program;
- Oversee all of Emerge America's social media campaigns and strategy;
- Develop a plan for Emerge themed op-eds and thought pieces which will include helping to write, edit, and place op-eds, as well as train Emerge America staff, state staff, and alumnae on writing op-eds;
- Provide training and ongoing support to our staff, board leaders, elected officials and program members to be better communicators;
- Assist President as needed on special projects;
- Maintain a cutting-edge knowledge of the impact of women on public policy and politics;
Experience and Qualifications:
- At least three to five years of experience in a communications role at a national and/or state organization;
- Experience managing and executing across several communications mediums;
- Experience working with members of the press, pitching stories and getting them placed in various types of news outlets;
- An understanding of the national Democratic political community;
- Strong writing and communication skills;
- Experience with multifaceted planning processes;
- Demonstrated flexibility in problem-solving;
- Proven track record of excellent follow-through and accountability;
- Outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail;
- Knowledge of women's political leadership issues;
- Campaign experience a plus;
- Training experience and/or the interest in developing strong training skills a plus.
Job Details
Travel, evening and weekend work are required for this position.
Salary commensurate with experience/benefits provided.
Emerge America is based in San Francisco. Candidates should be comfortable working/reporting to the President remotely should they be based in D.C.
