Since 1972, Clean Water Action (CWA) has been a leading grassroots organization that seeks to protect the environment and safeguard public health, promote passage of strong environmental laws, and help communities address local environmental problems. With over 1 MILLION members nationwide, our success comes from the strength in numbers generated by our field canvass organizers, which could be YOU!
We are a dynamic group known for our progressive, team-oriented work environment and with 43 years of victories for environmental, political, and social justice, we're just getting started!
Recent Victories :
~~Our most recent victory happened in October 2015 when we got Austin City Council to approve a 450 megawatt solar plant! It will be the LARGEST SOLAR INSTALLATION in Texas and more than double the solar availability across the state!
~~In September 2015, we won a national campaign that caps the amount of toxins allowed in our air and water from dirty coal plants around the country!
~~In May 2015, we won a 12-year battle with the EPA that finally extends more significant protections against corporate dumping of toxins to smaller bodies of water across the country.
Current Campaigns :
~~After generating close to 4,000 public comments to State, County, and City representatives in west Austin, we are wrapping up our Keep Mopac Local campaign! This campaign involves turning out strong public opposition on proposed DOUBLE-DECKER TOLL LANES on Mopac Highway. The construction will cost millions in taxpayers funds and could threaten the water quality of Lady Bird Lake & Barton Springs. Drivers could be charged up to a $14 toll per pass, further dividing equity and access between east and west Austin residents.
~~Statewide, we're working with the Legislature to regulate the Texas Railroad Commission (TRC) through the "Sunset Review" process, which determines the validity of state agencies every 10-15 years. Our staff is generating letters from the public to ask the Sunset Review Board to enforce higher standards for the TRC to be more transparent, change the name to reflect the agency's true nature in supporting the oil & gas industries, and publicly disclosing its permits, licenses, duties, and exemptions.
~~Our new national campaign is to work with the federal EPA to curb methane emissions from oil and gas wells across the country. Methane is a known greenhouse gas, and when released into the atmosphere, it becomes 86 times more potent over a 20 year period, furthering global warming and climate change.
Clean Water Action holds ELECTED OFFICIALS & CORPORATE POLLUTERS ACCOUNTABLE to our quality of life as residents, voters, and taxpayers. CWA has opportunities for CAREER GROWTH & ADVANCEMENT for employees at all levels. CWA VALUES DIVERSITY in the workplace and is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
