About the Texas Organizing Project

The Texas Organizing Project (TOP) is the leading community organizing group in the state of Texas—carrying out and winning multi- issue policy campaigns at the local and state level that directly confront the racial and economic disparities impacting millions of people of color. TOP is a membership-based organization with over 60,000 members and supporters anchored in Texas largest metro areas, 3 of the 10 largest cities in the US—Houston, Dallas and San Antonio.   We achieve our goals by conducting direct action organizing, grassroots lobbying, coalition building, policy research and advocacy and large- scale voter turn out programs to advance a more progressive agenda from the bottom up and improve our communities in areas such as: public education, economic opportunity, health care, immigration reform, and other quality of life issues.  With a seasoned and committed organizing staff, a diverse membership and leaders from all walks of life, TOP has already made a huge impact and is positioned to continue to grow.

TOP Education Fund is a 501(c3) organization that conducts public outreach and education campaigns in partnership with TOP.


 

Position Overview

The Development Coordinator will envision, implement, and oversee TOP and TOP Education Fund's development strategy, ensuring that annual fundraising goals are met to reach key measures of success for growth and impact.  The coordinator will be responsible for developing a diverse, strong, and expanding base of funding streams from foundations, individual donors and strategic partners to meet our $3.5 million annual budget. In doing so the coordinator will be responsible for a portion of direct fundraising as well as managing the internal communications and accountability systems among all staff's fundraising activities.  The Development Coordinator reports directly to the Deputy Executive Director. 

We have successfully built a strong reputation and relationships with funders both nationally and in Texas that are aligned with our long term plans and vision for change.  Moreover a senior leadership team of staff is in place with expertise in core programmatic areas, robust networks and fundraising skills.

 

Roles & Responsibilities

The central responsibilities of this position include management and coordination of a detailed work plan to keep multiple parties involved in fundraising, and the parallel streams of work areas on task to meet annual fundraising goals and intermediary benchmarks.

 

·       Foundation Funding

Take leading role in the preparation and submission of organization grant proposals, reports, and LOIs. Including: delegating narrative writing tasks and assuming general proposal writing duties directly; producing supplemental documents such as budgets and background materials; proof reading and quality checking all materials; maintaining schedule of grant proposals and reports for submission; prospecting for new funding opportunities; and coordinate funder cultivation such as events, briefings, mailings, etc.

 

·       Major Gifts & Individual Donors Program

Coordinate plan to generate and sustain individual donor contributions to the organization, including donor cultivation and special events. Develop protocols to maintain and grow our base of individual donors, focusing on a wide network of small donations and cultivation of a cadre of large donors. Ensure excellent follow-up and regular communication with donors.   Calendaring of dates for check-ins and support of lead staff responsible for ongoing relationships with individual donors.

 

·       Strategic Partners

Develop and coordinate plan to generate and sustain our strategic partners involvement and investments to the organization. Research and develop potential new partners for our work.  Manage executive staff's communication and protocols with partner organizations. 

 

·       Fundraising Events

Coordinate and manage annual Community Champion Awards events in Dallas, Houston and San Antonio.  Build, manage, and engage event Co-Chairs and event Committees.  Coordinate all logistics and track and manage staff and committee fundraising and commitments.  Schedule, coordinate, and manage other events throughout the state as necessary including donor briefings, fundraising events, and donor meetings. 

             

·       Systems Coordination

Develop, maintain, and revise internal systems for development work. Ensure that contact lists are regularly updated and accurate; ensure that all grant proposals and reports are properly archived. Develop and coordinate system to track fundraising productivity of leadership staff; foster shared accountability for reaching goals. Participate in budget & fundraising meetings to facilitate coordination.  Manage and maintain fundraising database. 

 

·       Miscellaneous Duties

Work on various assigned projects as needed, including but not limited to: preparation of donor meeting packets and materials for presentations; preparation for Board meetings; and list management.

                 

Required Qualifications and Skills

·       Bachelor's degree or higher

·       A minimum of two years of professional experience in a development/fundraising office

·       Experience working with donors and preferably a familiarity with the greater Texas donor community

·       Strong computer skills and experience with MS Office, Dropbox, and Google Docs; experience using NGP is strongly preferred

·       Superior written and oral communication skills

·       Detail oriented with exceptional organizational and project management abilities

·       Demonstrated ability to work as part of team, be flexible and learn new skills quickly

·       Ability to manage and work within budget and timeline goals

·       Graphic design/layout experience preferred

·       Must be willing to work flexible hours and some weekends

·       Access to reliable transportation and ability to travel primarily within the state of Texas

·       Passion and commitment for the Texas Organizing Project's work and mission

 

Location: Position is based in San Antonio or Houston TX.

Pay: Compensation is commensurate with experience.
