POSITION AVAILABLE: Senior Counsel – Position located in Washington, DC
REPORTS TO: President
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Work with national and state staff and the National Governing Board to develop and advise on national legal and policy positions with an emphasis on campaign finance; oversee and manage litigation and regulatory matters; and apply legal lens to programmatic strategies for Common Cause. This position is housed within the Programs department at Common Cause.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Duties include substantive legal and policy work at the state and federal level, particularly concerning money-in-politics and campaign finance reform. Perform legal and policy research; write and publish advocacy reports; coordinate and support litigation at Common Cause and among state organizations, including amicus briefs; draft memoranda on current law; manage pro bono relationships; analyze proposed legislation; draft rulemaking comments and Congressional testimony; analyze recent state and federal judicial opinions; provide support for issue advocacy campaigns; represent Common Cause in coalitions. Assist with applying a legal lens to communications efforts, including talking points, draft op-eds and responding to some press inquiries. In addition to campaign finance, duties are expected to include support for substantive programs initiatives including voting rights, election administration, ethics, legislative process and open government initiatives. Staff and coordinate with the Board's Litigation Committee and assist with coordinating litigation docket. Manage junior attorney and legal interns.
QUALIFICATIONS: Should possess a Juris Doctor; Strong attention to detail; Ability to draft succinct and comprehensive legal memoranda and write for popular audiences; Political and advocacy savvy; Knowledge of legislative process and political awareness; Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment with competing objectives; Strong writing and research skills; Collaborative working style and strong interpersonal skill; Commitment to the public interest; Working knowledge of social media tools, i.e., Facebook and Twitter.
