[jobsthatareLEFT] UltraViolet is hiring--Campaign Director (Virtual)

Campaign Director

Location: (Multiple states)

Type: Full Time

Min. Experience: Experienced

UltraViolet is a powerful and rapidly growing community of people from all walks of life who are mobilized to fight sexism and expand women's rights in all areas of life, from politics and government, to media and pop culture. UltraViolet works on a range of issues, including health care, economic security, violence, reproductive rights, racial justice, and immigration, by putting the voices of all women, especially women of color and LGBTQ women, front and center.

We're looking for a Campaign Director to be the creator and architect of the story of our work in one of our core issue areas, which include but are not limited to: ending violence against women, making progress toward economic security for women and families, ensuring access to full and affordable health care services, and calling out sexism in politics, media, and culture. In addition, as part of our collaborative team, you will directly engage in strategic conversations that will help shape our rapidly growing organization.

With more than 700,000 members across every state and congressional district, we make our voices heard to further the cause of full equality by empowering women and fighting attacks on women's rights. Since our launch in early 2012, our members have spoken out millions of times in favor of fair pay, equal representation, and health care, and protested against far-right attempts to control women's health and lives. We have successfully campaigned to have Facebook add the first woman to its corporate board, pushed Reebok to withdraw its sponsorship of rapper Rick Ross due to his sexually violent lyrics, called out the NFL and Commissioner Roger Goodell to take responsibility for violence against women by players in the league, and launched numerous multimedia ad campaigns to elevate conversations about pay equity, women's health, and sexual assault.

Equality at a higher frequency is what we're all about.

About the Campaign Director position

The UltraViolet Campaign Director is a senior leader at the center of our fights for equality and against sexism. The Campaign Director identifies and runs high-profile, rapid-response campaigns that engage hundreds of thousands of people and garner national media attention.

In addition, the Campaign Director is responsible for creating the story arc of our work around current and new campaigns while developing the campaign plan from start to finish. Candidates must have the ability to spot a moment, the willingness to go after any target, and the determination to keep pushing, even in the face of long odds. We are looking for someone who can spot an opportunity at 9 a.m., test the campaign by mid-morning, and launch that same day.

A successful candidate will have:

  • An instinct for breakout campaigns, an eye for media-worthiness, and a sharp sense of strategy.
  • Experience running campaigns from start to finish, including building partnerships and coalitions, creating compelling and urgent messages, analyzing metrics, and leading on-the-ground protests and events.
  • A demonstrated ability to be nimble and move quickly.
  • Pride at being creative, entrepreneurial, detail-oriented, flexible, and an exceptional writer.
  • The ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • A sense of humor and the desire to work with and help lead our small (and mighty) team.

A successful Campaign Director will also help build our organization, both internally and externally. UltraViolet members have made a real and lasting change over the course of the four years since we started, but there is so much more to do. This position is a real chance to help create and tell our story and build for the future.

Responsibilities:

Campaign Identification and Planning:

Monitor political and social events for their potential to become campaigns, and propose ideas for new campaigns

Develop detailed campaign plans; solicit input from team members and partners

Drive strategic and tactical planning and decision-making on key issues and campaigns

Campaign Production and Management:

Create campaign materials: emails, blog posts, op-eds, campaign pages, etc.

Interface with partners and consultants (e.g., designers, technology providers, etc.)

Stage email outreaches, landing pages, and other necessary technology

Work with our technology and design team to develop new projects and technology

Coordinate on-the-ground events, such as petition deliveries, house parties, and rallies

Manage member inquiries and issues related to the campaign, as needed

Campaign Analysis:

Continually analyze and report out on data and impact during campaigns

Conduct internal campaign evaluations, debriefs, and lessons learned

Qualifications:

  • 4 to 7 years relevant campaigning experience
  • Experience with communications and media strategies, including a proven track record of generating earned media
  • Proven writing ability in relevant setting (think action alerts, not thesis papers)
  • Familiarity with online campaigning, including HTML and SQL
  • Ability and willingness to turn on a dime when opportunity knocks
  • A team player who also can work and manage projects independently from start to finish
  • High comfort level with technology
  • Knowledge about political and cultural issues related to women's issues
  • Comfortable with a virtual office
