Defend Our Future is organizing people to take substantive actions to prevent climate change from being the biggest disaster affecting our generation. Poll after poll has shown that young people care more about action on climate than any other age group, but that enthusiasm has not translated into increased participation in our democratic process. With so much at stake, young people are far less likely than their older counterparts to vote.
So Defend Our Future is trying something new. We're tired of waiting for our leaders to act on climate, so we're challenging young people to take action on climate now. By asking students to pledge to become climate voters across the country this November we intend to show candidates of all parties that climate change is a priority issue for young voters, regardless of political affiliation.
The Regional Campus Director (RCD) will play a lead role doing just that. They will manage part time staff and work to develop a student-led volunteer program that motivates young people to act and vote on climate. As a non-partisan, non-profit organization, the RCD will lead the effort of engaging a wide and diverse range of students and faculty. The goal is to develop them into campus climate leaders who can expand the presence of the organization through face to face conversations, classroom visits, special events and social media outreach and move them to action.
Defend Our Future is a project of the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF). EDF is one of the world's largest non-profit environmental organizations whose mission to find solutions that benefit people and the environment is guided by science and economics.
The PA Regional Campus Director position will be based in Philadelphia, PA. Regional Campus Directors will be required to travel between multiple campuses. The position begins August 2016 running through November 2016 with the likelihood of extension into early 2017.
Job Responsibilities
· Manage a staff of three Deputy Organizers
· Recruit and build volunteer networks with one-on-one meetings, conversations with campus groups and presentations to classes;
· Develop and manage volunteer leaders and volunteer teams;
· Plan and execute campus events promoting action on climate;
· Work with partner organizations in collaboration on group events;
· Engage large numbers of students on a daily basis to collect pledges to vote on climate;
· Register and/or update the registration of young voters;
· Meet and exceed goals on a daily and weekly basis;
· Responsible for entering all data on a daily basis and submitting nightly and weekly progress reports; and
· Workplace professionalism, respect and integrity are required.
Reporting
The Regional Campus Director will report to the Program Director.
Qualifications
· Minimum of 1 year or 1 full cycle of organizing experience is required;
· Demonstrable experience executing organizing or other engagement plans;
· Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills;
· Prior experience organizing and managing volunteers is strongly preferred;
· Experience building and managing small teams or volunteers is strongly preferred;
· Strong leadership skills;
· Outgoing personality and enthusiasm in engaging students and working with volunteers;
· Moderate familiarity using NGPVAN is preferred;
· Intermediate level experience using Microsoft Office software;
· Must have valid driver's license and daily access to a car;
· Must have access to a working lap top computer that is WiFi enabled;
· Familiarity with social networking tools;
· Ability to work on your own and in a team-oriented environment;
· Willingness to work irregular weekday, evening and weekend hours; and
· Familiarity with climate change issues is preferred.
Compensation
The Regional Campus Director will receive a salary of $4,000 per month plus health insurance benefits and a monthly travel stipend.
