[jobsthatareLEFT] Communications Director, Chesapeake Climate Action Network (Takoma Park/DC)

Communications Director (Takoma Park/DC)

The Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) is seeking a Communications Director to oversee communications strategy, media and digital outreach, and message development for our organization's state-based climate and clean energy campaigns.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of generating media coverage, experience using a variety of communications tools to mobilize support for campaigns, and strong writing and editing skills. They should be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and be able to successfully juggle multiple campaign deadlines and demands. The position offers an opportunity to shape media and online strategies that will drive concrete change -- from passing cutting-edge state legislation to stopping dirty energy projects -- in coordination with CCAN's leadership team, campaign staff, coalitions, and community-based partners.

About Us

For 14 years, CCAN has been leading the fight for bold and just solutions to climate change in the Chesapeake region of Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Our mission is to build a diverse movement that is powerful enough to put our region on the path to climate stability, while using our proximity to the nation's capital to inspire action in neighboring states, around the country and across the world.

CCAN is a fast-paced, results-oriented organization. We take on the big fights and focus on grassroots organizing, while using every tool at our disposal -- including media outreach, policy analysis, lobbying, and the law -- to advance our campaigns. Campaign priorities right now include: achieving a permanent ban on fracking in Maryland, stopping two major proposed fracked-gas pipelines that would bisect Virginia, and passing a nation-leading fee on carbon pollution in Washington, D.C.

Key Job Responsibilities

The Communications Director reports to the Executive Director and manages a full-time Communications Associate. The Communications Director's key responsibilities include:
  • Communications Strategy and Management: Work with state-based campaign teams and the Communications Associate to plan and oversee all of the communications aspects of our campaigns, including message development, media outreach, social media, website updates, and email list management.
  • Media Outreach: Maintain CCAN's media lists and relationships with reporters across the region, and lead the pitching of news stories, events and op-eds to advance our campaigns.
  • Digital Outreach & Growth: Coordinate with the Communications Associate, campaign staff, and consultants (when needed) to maintain and update CCAN's website, email action list, and social media channels, with the dual goals of advancing our campaigns and growing our base of supporters.
  • Organization and Staff Management: Advise and oversee efforts related to branding, online fundraising, and communications priorities; manage and support the professional development of the Communications Associate; coach other staff in communications skills and best practices.
Qualifications

We're seeking candidates who excel in writing and editing, have experience shaping successful communications strategies, and have strong judgment and project management skills. You should have:
  • 4+ years of experience in the communications field, including working with reporters, writing for a variety of audiences, and developing campaign messaging.
  • Proven ability to write clearly and persuasively for multiple audiences and the media, and to edit others' writing for clarity, tone and grammar.
  • A track record of generating quality media coverage and building relationships with reporters.
  • Broad knowledge of digital organizing tools, and comfort using and/or learning a variety of tech platforms -- i.e. you don't need to be an expert coder but you should be comfortable using a supporter management system like Salsa and keeping up with best practices and strategies.
  • Proven ability to juggle multiple projects and deadlines, while setting priorities and maintaining strong attention to detail.
  • Commitment to the mission of fighting climate change.
Staff management experience is a plus but not required.

Salary and Location

Salary is commensurate with experience. We provide a generous benefits package including health care, dental coverage, a 401K and four weeks of paid vacation.

This position is based in CCAN's Takoma Park, Md. office, which borders Washington, D.C. and is a short walk from the Takoma metro station.
