Job Title: Education Director

Location: Harrisburg, PA

General Statement of Duties: The Education Director will be responsible for building a program of sustained staff and member leader development across our Local. This will include traditional educational curriculum and material development, but will also include maximizing development opportunities in all facets of our work. The Director position in conjunction with available resources from the Local, SEIU State Council, PA AFL-CIO and SEIU International Union, will have primary responsibility to develop, schedule and conduct Statewide Leadership Conferences as well as regional based training of volunteer elected union leaders and members. The Education Director will work with other managers and staff, to build a culture and program dedicated to member development based on the iron rule of organizing: "Do not do for others what they can do themselves" and driven by a willingness to innovate, experiment, take risks, and work in a goals-driven outcome based accountable environment.

Duties include but not limited to:

  • Develops and drives an Adult Education program to train members, staff and leaders. The position will develop curriculum ranging from basic steward training to new Field Staff training as well as advanced Steward and Staff training with corresponding skill assessment for each.
  • Identify gaps, on an on-going basis, in the Local's training/educational offerings and develop curriculum and materials to fill those gaps.
  • Leadership identification and development
  • Design and lead Member Leader Activist (MLA) programs to engage members and develop leaders to their highest capacity, at every level of the union
  • Ensures that members, member volunteer leaders and staff get necessary training in line with organizational goals.
  • Manages a system that supports follow through and accountability; including developing goals and metrics to measure the program's progress:
  • Ensures that the new skills/practices taught in trainings get implemented
  • Monitors/evaluates ongoing implementation of MLA plan, progress toward goals and adjusts plan accordingly to promote success.
  • Ensures that MLA participation is being tracked and reports tracking to the International Union.
  • Conducts trainings and/or coordinates training at all levels from the basic "what is a union and union member" to advanced Steward and Statewide Leader duties and obligations.
  • Conducts various Regional trainings consistent with identified needs and goals.
  • Develops "Train the Trainer" curriculum for professional staff and advanced member leaders

Job Requirements:

  • Four year degree in education or related field. Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in labor movement work and ability to supervise staff and direct volunteers.
  • Demonstrated experience in adult education.
  • Experience in leader identification, recruitment, and development
  • Bi-Lingual ability to speak and write in English and Spanish a plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Commitment to the labor movement and a strong work ethic.
  • Functions with a high level of integrity, transparency, and ability to give and receive feedback.
  • Travel within Pennsylvania to conduct training and periodic out of state travel for meetings, training and duties as may be determined by the nature of Union Education work.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.
