Job Title: Director of the BOLD Center, Building Organization and Leadership Development Grade: G

Location: Washington, D.C.

Purpose:

This position is responsible for directing the programs of the BOLD Center, a program within LAJ ("Leaders in Action for Justice". LAJ is dedicated to building visionary, strategic and inclusive leaders and equitable, powerful and agile organizations to realize the vision and strategies of SEIU.

The BOLD Center supports organizational change initiatives in local unions and at the national headquarters; develops, teaches and evaluates leadership development programs for high-level elected and staff leaders; leads the equity, inclusion and racial justice work in the local unions; provides executive coaching and facilitates innovation efforts and centers the union's innovation learnings.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with leaders and staff to lead organizational change that will help transform the union to be innovative, nimble and sustainable.
  • Develop, facilitate and evaluate programs for high-level elected and staff leadership that include a focus on: personal mastery, team and group development, change management, talent management, equity and inclusion, and racial justice.
  • Facilitate strategic planning sessions.
  • Recruit, supervise, support and evaluate a diverse group of 25 staff and consultants who work with all levels of local unions and the headquarters.
  • Support innovation efforts in the union and center the union's learnings around innovation.
  • Oversee the development and management of the BOLD Center's plan and budget.
  • Provide direction to the staff responsible for the management of consultant agreements, memorandums of understanding and billing.
  • Perform other duties as required to support the department and its mission.

Contacts:

SEIU International officers; officer-appointed advisory committees including the 21st Century Union committee of the SEIU Executive Board; division and department directors; SEIU Local leaders and staff; BOLD Center consultants and other consultants contracted through the International.

Direction and Decision Making:

This position reports to the Director of Organizational Leadership and is a member of the Senior Leadership Team of the LAJ Department. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team works closely with other members of the team to help set the direction of LAJ work in the union and develop programs for the LAJ department.

Physical Requirements:

Travel and work beyond traditional business hours is required. The position is located in Washington DC.

Education and Experience

Degree from an accredited four-year college or university or experience equivalent to a degree. Graduate-level accreditation in organization development or equivalent experience.

A minimum of ten (10) years of experience demonstrating progressively greater responsibility in a union, political, nonprofit or issue-driven environment; a minimum of five (5) years of experience working in the organization change field with non-profits; a minimum of three (3) years of experience supervising and directing staff, including management level staff.

All candidates must be able to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement programs that help organizations successfully manage organizational change.
  • Extensive knowledge of leadership development, organization change and innovation theories, models and practices.
  • Knowledge of and experience with anti-racist organizational change and organizational equity and inclusion practices
  • Strong facilitation skills.
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities in a timely manner and keep track of a variety of projects.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with all levels of staff and elected officers
  • Ability to develop diverse high-performing teams
  • Experience supervising management level staff.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills, including strategic planning.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, including the ability to make presentations, plan and develop materials and conferences
  • Demonstrated ability to operate in politically sensitive situations, to exercise good judgment and think critically.
  • Skilled in the use of technology.
  • Knowledge of unions and local union structures, systems and culture preferred.
