Job Title: Organizing Director
Location: San Jose, CA
SEIU Local 521 is now hiring an Organizing Director to serve the CA Central Bay and Central Valley area. SEIU Local 521 is on the cutting edge of progressive activism, building the power of low-wage workers and engaging in larger social issues such as immigration, racial and environmental justice. SEIU Local 521 represents nearly 40,000 public- and non-profit, private sector workers.
Local 521 is currently running external organizing drives in Childcare and publicly-funded Healthcare. We are looking for an energetic, forward thinking person who is excited to be a part of a movement for real social change and who wants to be part of a team that fights and wins for workers, their families, and their communities. We are seeking an Organizing Director to run aggressive campaigns. As a Director, your role is to work with staff and members to oversee and help drive campaigns.
Responsibilities Include (but not limited to):
Providing strategic vision & plan for the overall Organizing Department and for multiple campaigns.
Leading and providing support to teams of staff and members in the execution of overall campaign plan as well as individual work plans.
Assisting in the training and development of staff and member organizers.
Leading staff by example, setting high standards in work ethic and professional approach to the work.
Making short and long term campaign plans, and carrying out multi-component plans.
Creating and articulating a positive vision for campaigns and of the union as a whole.
Building one-one-one relationships with workers, educating them about the union.
Conducting individual and group meetings with workers to discuss and plan organizing campaigns.
Work with staff to identify, recruit, and develop leaders to guide and lead their campaign.
Motivating individual workers and groups of workers to take action.
Work to create real and positive ways to involve community allies in current organizing campaigns.
Engaging workers in broader union efforts to change industry standards as a whole.
Qualifications:
Prior management of union staff experience
Commitment to social justice
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to effectively plan and implement work and manage time, as part of a team and individually.
Willingness and ability to work long and irregular hours, including evenings and weekends
Flexibility for travel based on work assignments
Driver's license and reliable car is a must
Motivated self- starter who is also a solid team player
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Strong personal planning and time management skills
The ability to work with people from other cultures and backgrounds
Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
Salary & Benefits:
Salary is competitive and flexible based on prior relevant experience
Full benefits package including health insurance, pension plan, car allowance, and paid vacation
REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a valid California driver's license; must pass a DMV check and have a good driving record; must have auto insurance that covers business driving (minimum of $100,000 per person/$300,000 per incident bodily injury liability/$100,000 property coverage); and must possess an automobile for business use.
