Bend the Arc is building the power and passion of the progressive Jewish movement in America by bringing together Jews from across the country to advocate and organize for a more just and equal society. We are the only national Jewish organization that is focused solely on promoting these values here in the U.S. The Bend the Arc family of organizations consists of Bend the Arc: A Jewish Partnership for Justice, our 501(c)(3) organizing, education and leadership arm; Bend the Arc Jewish Action, our 501(c)(4) advocacy arm; and Bend the Arc Jewish Action PAC, a political action committee dedicated to supporting candidates who share our vision for a more just and equal society. Headquartered in New York City, we have offices in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, and San Francisco, with chapters organizing nationwide.

 

Position:

 

Bend the Arc's field program seeks to mobilize American Jews and allies through deep, long-term relationship building in order to execute the following strategy:

 

Work with our key partners and build to scale our national base and grassroots volunteer and leadership capacity so that we can activate Jewish power to:

  1. Fight the Trump/Republican agenda alongside impacted communities to prevent regressive and authoritarian policies and practices and expose, discredit and disrupt their narrative;

  2. Win strategic state and local victories that refute and reject the destructive national Trump/Republican agenda, elevate an alternative, and move our vision forward;

  3. Win power in 2018 and 2020 to deliver on our vision.

To win beyond 2020 we will develop Jewish leaders grounded in our values of deeper communal purpose and commitment to justice and capable of leading grassroots movements and advocacy organizations.

 

Reporting to the Deputy Field Director, the part-time South Bay Organizer is an integral member of Bend the Arc's field team, and is responsible for supporting the growth and effectiveness of the South Bay Chapter of Bend the Arc. The South Bay Organizer will identify and engage South Bay volunteer leaders and coach, mentor, and train these leaders to organize and build power through Bend the Arc's campaigns. The South Bay Organizer will excel at building relationships with volunteer leaders and organizational partners within and outside of the Jewish community; be driven by a desire to build state-wide and national political power; be highly motivated and goal oriented; be able to work both independently and as part of a team; and be located in the South Bay, while coordinating with San Francisco-based colleagues and a nationwide organization..

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Volunteer Development and Management. You will show your leadership in managing relationships, building culture, and creating the Bend the Arc leader experience with Bend the Arc members, progressive allies, and fellow Bend the Arc staff to set and meet goals for the South Bay chapter.

  • Guiding leaders to engage in strategic campaigning.

  • Volunteer Recruitment. You'll recruit Bend the Arc leaders to participate in leadership development and action opportunities.

  • Leadership Development. Through mentoring, coaching, and training, you'll prepare volunteer leaders to take on greater and greater responsibility.

  • Event and Action Organizing. You'll support volunteer leaders to organize strategic actions and events in the South Bay for state and national-priority campaigns.

  • Social Media. You'll train and coach member leaders to use social media to advance their campaigns.

  • Rapid Response. When news breaks, our network often needs to respond immediately. Whether it's rallies or house parties, you'll make sure Bend the Arc responds forcefully when we need to spring into action.

  • Reporting. You'll report directly to Bend the Arc's Deputy Field Director and document your progress and results in detail.

  • You will coordinate with and provide occasional support to fundraising efforts

 

 

Skills and Qualifications:

 

  • Demonstrated success in community organizing, legislative organizing, and/or electoral organizing;

  • Commitment to the mission and vision of Bend the Arc;

  • Experience working respectfully and collaboratively with volunteers to build their skills and commitment and inspire their best work;

  • Proven ability to build partnerships and relationships of trust with coalition organizations;

  • Commitment to anti-oppression practices and experience centering the leadership of People of Color in a multi-racial organizing context;

  • Demonstrated success at keeping multiple projects organized; good work planning skills; strong administrative and time­-management skills;

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;

  • Ability to work evenings and Sundays as needed;

  • Creativity, flexibility and comfort working in a fast­-paced campaign environment;

  • Inquisitive, sense of humor, proactive, solution­ oriented, collaborative, conscientious, responsible and efficient with a positive attitude; skilled and effective team player;

  • Experience using NationBuilder or other CRM and CMS programs is preferred.

  • Experience using NPG VAN is a plus.

 

Compensation and Hours:

 

This is a part-time position (up to 1 day per week), with the need for periodic evening or weekend hours.  Salary is competitive and appropriate to experience, and includes paid time off benefits.
