The Opportunity

Founded in 2017, Emerge New York is the premier political leadership training organization for Democratic women in New York. Our mission is to recruit, train, and inspire Democratic women to pursue public office at the local, state and national levels through our 6-month campaign-training program. Emerge New York is an affiliate of Emerge America, a national organization currently working in 23 states: Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

Responsibilities

In conjunction with the Emerge America and the Emerge New York Board of Directors, the Executive Director will launch and organize the Emerge New York training program and is responsible for building and maintaining the organizational infrastructure.

Fundraising and financial management:

  • Lead an effort to build robust revenues;
  • Set up and organize fundraising events;
  • Hire fundraising consultant(s), if needed;
  • Develop and expand lists of potential donors;
  • Maintain financial management and accounting records for the organization;
  • Meet fundraising goals as set forth by contract.

Partnerships and Relationships:

  • Represent Emerge New York in a variety of capacities (meetings, speeches, panels, councils) throughout the state;
  • Develop and maintain relationships with elected officials, activists, non-profit organizations, press and others within the New York Democratic political community;
  • Coordinate with the Emerge national umbrella organization, Emerge America and other Emerge affiliates;
  • Manage relationships with the broader Emerge New York community, including program members, alumnae, friends and advisors;
  • Oversee the overall communications strategy.

Program:

  • Manage program member outreach, recruitment, and selection process with the State Board;
  • Identify, secure, and support Emerge curriculum trainers;
  • Organize training sessions of the Emerge program, including scheduling speakers, organizing curriculum materials and food/beverage for each session.

Board of Directors Facilitation

  • Oversee and collaborate with the key Board Committees to achieve the goals of the organization. 

Administration

  • After growing revenues sufficiently, attract, inspire and develop a second staff member;
  • Maintain a highly effective and efficient organization as measured by revenue growth and major donor development to support priorities;
  • Develop and manage annual budgets that are aligned to strategic goals of the organization;
  • Ensure financial soundness, transparency and high ethical standards in the financial and administrative activities of Emerge New York.

Ideal Experience and Capabilities

We are seeking a strong, leader with deep passion for our mission who can launch a new affiliate and lead it towards rapid growth. The ideal person is a creative problem solver and entrepreneurial self-starter.

  • A significant and proven track record of fundraising, including raising major gifts;
  • Experience working in statewide New York politics required
  • An understanding of the role of the Board of Directors, of the dynamics between an organization's staff and its volunteer directors and the ability to manage that dynamic;
  • Strong, persuasive communicator comfortable being the public face of the organization in a variety of settings, ranging from small, intimate meetings to large public forums, including conventional and social media;
  • Experience building, inspiring, developing and managing a small staff;
  • Organized executor who can manage multiple and varied projects;
  • Demonstrated commitment to Democratic political organizing;
  • Passion for the issue of advancing women in politics;
  • Knowledge of women's political leadership issues and politics;
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with diverse and multi-cultural constituencies, including boards of directors, staff, donors, volunteers and an array of supporters and stakeholders;
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Effective multi-tasking abilities and efficiency in time management. 
  • Experience with press.

Compensation, Job Location & Schedule

  • Emerge New York offers a competitive salary that will be commensurate with the successful candidate's experiences and qualifications;
  • Emerge New York's fundraising base is in New York City, but we are a statewide organization and the Executive Director can be located anywhere in New York;
  • The job includes statewide travel with some evening and weekend work.  A valid drivers license is required.
