Communications Associate


DESCRIPTION

Washington CAN is seeking a full-time communications associate to create content, develop the organization's messaging, manage social media, and expand the organization's media presence.

TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

20% Social Media

  • Work with supervisors and staff to develop a social media strategy and effectively implement it.
  • Grow social media presence to make it an effective advocacy tool
  • Write and publish social media posts for Washington CAN
  • Work with member organizations to help them develop and implement their social media plans.
  • Track analytics of social media platforms.

40% New Content

  • Write and publish posts on the website, using Squarespace, about events, policy, and relevant political developments.
  • Capture photos for the website and social media pages.
  • Capture and edit video of events for the website and social media.
  • Upload new content to the website and edit copy.
  • Provide content and copy editing assistance to supervisors and staff.
  • Provide editing and/or writing assistance for op-ed submissions by members, staff etc.

40 % Public Relations

  • Coordinate external messaging and communications with local, regional, and national media.
  • Expand media relations network for the organization, connecting to more local publications across the state about policies newsworthy to their community.
  • Help build Washington CAN's media presence, by emphasizing – through messaging connecting with reporters – the organization's role in creating radical policy.
  • Serve as press liaison at events, and contact media about upcoming actions, policy pushes.
  • Work to prepare Washington CAN members to do media interviews.
  • Create and implement actionable steps that increase the organization's public visibility and brand awareness.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Deep commitment and passion for racial, gender, and social justice.
  • Knowledge and understanding of how to frame issues through an equity lens.
  • The ability to work with a diverse array of community members, staff, and board.
  • A fast and decent writer who can quickly turnaround press releases, editorials, public testimonies, website postings, e-mail alerts, etc.
  • Understanding of how to both use social media as an effective advocacy tool and grow our following.
  • The ability to briefly and effectively pitch reporters on protests, press conferences, report releases, town halls, etc.
  • Spanish fluency preferred

The Communications Associate position is full-time with a competitive salary, health and dental coverage after 90 days, 401(k) pension plan, and paid holiday, vacation, and sick leave.
