POSITION SUMMARY:

The Senior Manager, Advocacy is responsible for working with the Associate Director, Advocacy to identify, develop, and manage opportunities for growing the organization's grassroots network and the organization's grassroots advocacy campaigns. This includes the creation and implementation of Advocacy campaigns, volunteer and grassroots tools and resources, and trainings for staff and volunteers. In addition, this role advises leadership of necessary shifts in strategy or opportunities to achieve desired outcomes.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Works with Associate Director, Advocacy to advance the organization's legislative agenda, as set by the President and CEO and senior leaders, to develop strategies that expand our grassroots network, and keep current advocates engaged in the organization. 
  • Identify key congressional districts that are important to PanCAN's issues and build relationships with those offices through our grassroots network.
  • Develops and tracks key metrics for engagement with Congress in each congressional cycle, for each advocacy campaign and for each action alert that is sent out by GAA that measure effectiveness of Advocacy program.
  • Works with Associate Director, Advocacy to plan and implement the annual Advocacy Days program including responsibility for working with consultant to ensure the scheduling of congressional meetings and responsibility for the entire registration process.
  • Draft correspondence to members of Congress including organizational letters and targeted talking points for volunteers in congressional meetings.
  • Track and advises on organization's quarterly lobbying reports.
  • Draft action alerts and other correspondence to PanCAN constituents and advocates including emails, action alert, thank-you messages, autoresponder messages and social media copy to achieve expected results.
  • Ensure GAA information on PanCAN website is current and engaging and work with Associate Director, Advocacy and Marketing and Communications to update content.
  • Execute grassroots Advocacy campaigns including the production and management of the following resources:  Advocacy Calendar, Congressional Updates, Campaign Toolkits, and Advocacy Guide.
  • Manages the development of all campaign and role-specific training for staff and volunteers.
  • Working in conjunction with the Community Engagement staff to develop compelling content to activate Advocacy Leaders for high-touch outreach to congressional staff contacts when necessary.
  • Provides analysis of Advocacy volunteers and opportunities to strengthen the network to achieve goals.
  • Review and approve requests for government officials to attend PanCAN events.
  • Works with Associate Director, Advocacy and Community Engagement to evaluate Advocacy program on a regular basis.
  • Serves as main liaison with Community Relationship Managers to answer Advocacy questions that will help with volunteer support and grassroots activity and works to develop solutions when needed.
  • Provides customer service in the DC office for all GAA related questions with both PanCAN staff and external constituents.
  • Work with Associate Director, Advocacy to develop annual plan and budget for GAA.
  • As directed, travels to the organization's headquarters in Los Angeles, CA and Affiliate events to assist with Advocacy activities.
  • Carries out all responsibilities in an honest, ethical and professional manner.
  • Other duties as assigned.


    QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS: The following are the minimum qualifications which an individual needs in order to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of this position. 

    • Four year college degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
    • Eight years' experience working in grassroots organizing and/or advocacy. Capitol Hill and/or political campaign experience a plus. 
    • Excellent writing skills and knowledge of written advocacy communication formats and composition; excellent oral communication skills; demonstrated volunteer management skills.
    • Experience with creating and executing training materials for grassroots.
    • Experience working with and understanding volunteer driven models.
    • Familiarity with policy development process and key aspects of the legislative process.
    • Excellent organizational skills to manage robust and fast-paced activities.
    • Ability to advocate for the needs of people affected by pancreatic cancer and to accurately represent the interests of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
    • Education and/or demonstrated experience related to federal and/or state legislative processes.
    • Ability to synthesize and/or analyze complex information.
    • Ability to produce reports and presentations using Excel, PowerPoint and other computer-based technologies.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
    • Experience working in a remote office with the ability and willingness to work with bi-coastal staff.
    • Ability to work effectively in a small team and with advocates.
    • Knowledge of general office practices and procedures.
    • Ability to exercise good judgment and maintain highest level of confidentiality.
    • Ability to communicate with employees and other agency contacts in a courteous and professional manner.
    • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and maintain schedules.
    • Ability to present oral and written reports.
    • Ability to make decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures.
    • Ability to work comfortably with diverse populations, with sensitivity to issues concerning pancreatic cancer.
