Toxic Free NC Executive Director Job Description
Position:
The Executive Director (ED) will bring their vision to the organization and help Toxic Free NC to lead North Carolina's environmental health movement. Serving as Toxic Free NC's external 'face' and internal guide and coach to the staff, the ED will manage a team of 5 professionals and report to a volunteer board of directors. In addition to ensuring the implementation of all aspects of operations and program, the ED will directly staff a program area of their choice.
Duties & Responsibilities:
1) Promote Environmental Health and Justice in North Carolina – This should be a driving passion for the ED, among whose top goals should be reducing pesticide and toxic exposures to people and the planet.
2) Organizational Advancement –The ED will be expected to achieve significant fundraising growth, with primary responsibility to cultivate and engage major donors and foundations, and collaboration with all staff members in program-specific fundraising and campaigns. The ED will also undertake regular strategic planning and work with Toxic Free NC's broad stakeholder base to realize programmatic, administrative, and fiscal goals.
3) Organizational Management – The ED will supervise both program and administrative staff and work with the team to create annual budgets, work plans, and goals. The ED is also responsible for all staff and program evaluation, including monthly financial and program updates to the board of directors.
4) External Relations – The ED will ensure Toxic Free NC's participation in various forums, as well as building new alliances and coalitions to more effectively serve the mission. This may include public speaking, media relations, providing technical assistance to organizations and communities, outreach and education, and representing Toxic Free NC on various boards and committees.
5) Direct Program Implementation – The ED will bring her or his own abilities and connections to bear in Toxic Free NC's program work. The organization is especially looking for someone whose unique skill set – whether as a scientist, advocate, and/or communicator – advances our core program areas.
Skills and Experience: Required
• Fundraising – Broad knowledge of all areas of campaigns, major gifts, foundation and corporate fundraising, including direct and managerial experience.
• Education – Minimum bachelor's degree and/or experience in a relevant area of science, communications, and leadership experience. Minimum five years managing a diverse staff of direct reports and familiarity with a collaborative management style.
Preferred
• Expertise – Demonstrated knowledge of environmental health and justice, sustainable agriculture and food justice, with a minimum five years overall experience in a related field. Note will be given to membership in professional organizations, volunteer work, philanthropy, publications, and speaking history.
• Skills – Fundraising, community organizing, campaign design and implementation, lobbying and policy advocacy, public speaking, strategic planning and organizational goal setting, program evaluation, and consensus building. Spanish language skills are desired but not required.
Salary range commensurate with experience: $60,000 and a benefits package including comprehensive health care
