Georgia Alliance for Progress

 

Position Description

The Communications Director will support the Georgia Alliance for Progress, ProGeorgia and its partner organizations, and Georgia Engaged and its partner organizations. The Communications Director will protect and promote these organizations through strategic communications development and direct media support.

 

This position is the sole communications role at this time, though we could grow staff capacity over time as necessary. The Communications Director would then oversee additional staff.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

 

1.     Strategy, Planning and Communications: Develop and implement overall communications strategy for Georgia's progressive coalition and create specific messaging campaigns to expand and mobilize the electorate.

2.     Organizational Development: Assist partner organizations in developing strategic communications plans that encourage year-round engagement of members and constituents through traditional and social media.  Support member organizations through the development of communications plans, providing technical assistance, messaging guidance, prepared trainings and responding to partner requests.  

 

3.     Message Development and Guidance: Provide strategic messaging and communications guidance and support to the specific campaigns and workgroups, specifically highlighting opportunities for expanding outreach.

 

4.     Campaign coordination: Coordinate on specific communications campaigns, provide coalition support and guidance, message development and earned and social media strategies.

 

5.     Earned media outreach and relationship building: Organize and implement earned media events and build relationships with earned media outlets as connect outlets to key progressive partners.  

 

6.     National collaboration: Work with national partners to ensure message and campaign alignment between local, state and national messaging activities.

 

7.     Paid Media and public opinion research, development and guidance: Advise on paid media strategy, including content, placement, and timing, in support of organizations' strategic goals and identify paid media opportunities that deliver. Also lead paid research and public opinion polling to develop effective messaging.

 

Qualifications

 

Applicants should have:

    A demonstrated commitment to progressive values;

    A demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with reporters;

    A demonstrated ability to place and pitch stories, op-eds and other content;

    Strong people skills and ability to exercise good judgment and discretion;

    Exceptional written and verbal communications skills, including public speaking;

    Political communications experience, either in reporting, policy, or campaigns

    The ability to manage several projects at once;

    The ability to work proactively and independently;

    Assertiveness and tact in handling confidential and sensitive issues and documents;

    A basic familiarity with 501(c)(3), (c)(4) and 527 distinctions and regulations;

    The ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment;

    A strong work ethic; and

    A sense of humor.

 

Reports to:      Executive Director

Based in:         Atlanta, Georgia

Start date:       As soon as possible

Travel:             Some travel may be required

Salary:             Commensurate with experience
