The position of Democracy Summer Program Associate Fellow is a 3 month full time commitment (approximately May 15-Aug 18). It provides a $3000 stipend for the duration of the program. Program hours are approximately 35 weekly hours. An associate can expect to work 5-10 additional weekly hours.
Positions are in Philadelphia; Des Moines, IA; Charlottesville VA; Twin Cities, MN. (There may be additional cities).
The Program associate will work closely with his/her/their Regional Director to ensure that the Democracy Summer daily program schedule runs smoothly and is exciting and challenging.
Tasks include but are not limited to
- Administrative tasks
- coordinating guest speakers and facilitators -- scheduling, confirming details, sending thank yous
- producing program materials (e.g. name tags; reading materials; etc.)
- updating daily schedule
- Program tasks
- coordinate working groups (e.g. book club, kitchen crew, social media team)
- program set up
- occasional program facilitation
- coordinate with campaigns re: deployment (e.g. canvassing; phone banking, fund raising events)
- producing and delivering program briefings and debriefings as assigned
- pursuant to workshops and training on these topics, guiding Fellows in the basics of phone banking, canvassing, donor research, etc.
- Other
- program related errands
- social media updates
- serve as a role model to Fellows all ways
- helping to build community amongst the Fellows, not only by setting a good example, but by fostering a positive environment
- additional tasks as assigned
Qualifications
- Current College student or recent graduate.
- Strong commitment to and passion for social justice and the Democracy Summer mission
- 2-3 years of experience during college in political engagement and electoral organizing
- Excellent organizational skills
Strong communication skills
Strong social media capabilities or the desire and ability to build one's social media capacity
- A penchant for rigorous planning and preparation while possessing equal measure of flexibility and the ability to pivot in line with the fast pace changes in political work
- Emotional maturity and intelligence
- Comfortable taking leadership and responsibility
- Able to step back and create leadership opportunities for others
- Intellectual and political curiosity
- A team player
- General knowledge of the electoral process; extensive knowledge of one's regional and state politics a plus
