ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Work with program, communication, and development staff to implement strategic campaigns that advance campaign finance and ethics reforms to make government work better for everyone. Policy reform priorities will include regulating financial conflicts of interest, revolving door restrictions, gift bans, pay-to-play restrictions, preventing foreign influence in U.S. elections and policymaking, small donor public financing, transparency/disclosure, and regulating sexual harassment by public officials as unethical conduct.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Money in Politics / Ethics Program Director will have the following responsibilities and duties:
· Strategic campaign planning and execution, in collaboration with both national and state staff, to achieve specific policy goals at the federal, state, and municipal levels;
· Drafting model legislation;
· Drafting legal documents and otherwise facilitating participation in program-relevant legal proceedings, including participation in litigation, administrative agency enforcement actions and administrative rulemaking proceedings;
· Developing original research, reports, website content, social media, and other materials to help educate and mobilize the public;
· Building a stronger connection to money in politics / ethics issues for activists, coalition partners, policymakers, and other influencers;
· Conducting educational visits with federal and state policy makers;
· Meeting with donors and writing grant proposals and reports for the Money in Politics / Ethics Program in coordination with the development team;
· Sharing supervision of interns and legal fellows; and
· Other work as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate must have:
· Law degree and be admitted to the bar in one or more jurisdictions;
· 2+ years of experience in money in politics and/or government ethics work;
· Commitment to Common Cause issues and agenda;
· Commitment to cultural competency, including the ability to work effectively with those belonging to groups of diverse backgrounds, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, religion, language, ability, age, and socioeconomic status;
· Commitment to advancing racial equity through Common Cause issue agenda;
· Ability to work effectively with and build alliances among diverse communities and stakeholders, including but not limited to people of color, people of diverse political affiliations, business leaders, young people, and members of faith communities;
· Strong legal research skills;
· Ability to grasp complex legal and policy issues;
· Ability to work on multiple tasks with competing priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment;
· Collaborative working style and strong interpersonal skills;
· Excellent oral and written communication skills;
· Ability to handle a range of responsibilities; and
· Willingness to travel and occasionally work evenings and weekends.
