Position Summary:
The Law Clerk reports to and will work closely with LEE's General Counsel. The General Counsel provides legal and strategic advice to the Executive Director, the leadership team, and to LEE's staff across all program and operations teams: Policy and Advocacy; Organizing Leadership; Communications; Supporter Relations; Elected Leadership; Finance; Leadership Development and Design; New Ventures; Regional Impact; Talent, Learning and Culture; and Technology. The General Counsel practices in a wide range of substantive areas including employment law, tax-exempt organization law, general compliance, and campaign finance laws. Day-to-day work often includes: advising staff on how to navigate legal as well as policy questions, drafting high-level communications for staff, developing and analyzing systems and processes for compliance, drafting and reviewing contracts, and supporting the organization's board of directors.
This is an unpaid one-semester internship for fall 2018, spring 2019, or summer 2019. This position may be eligible for student academic credit hours. When submitting your application, please include a resume, cover letter, copy of your law school transcript, writing sample no more than five pages in length, and a letter of recommendation.

Responsibilities:
- Conducting legal research across a wide variety of substantive areas with a particular focus on education law, corporate law, contracts, and tax-exempt organization law with an opportunity to create a writing sample
- Producing high-quality written communication for different constituencies within the organization, including training materials and presentations related to various areas of legal compliance
- Other responsibilities, as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree
- Enrolled in law school and actively pursuing a J.D. with at least 1 year of law school complete
- 3.2 GPA or above in law school
- Able to work onsite during business hours in an office located in New York City at least two days/week

- Discretion, ownership, and initiative to independently drive projects forward
- Commitment to educational equity
- Strong written and interpersonal communication skills
- Strong research skills
- Knowledge of Microsoft Outlook and PowerPoint
- Access to Lexis/Nexis or Westlaw
