[jobsthatareLEFT by GAIN] Campaign Manager, Linda Sperling for Board of Supervisors, Fairfax County VA (Northern VA/DC area)

Linda Sperling for Springfield District Supervisor—Fairfax County, VA—is seeking an experienced, aggressive and highly motivated campaign manager for the Nov 5, 2019 elections.

Linda is a mom, businesswoman, former college professor and community leader (and first-time candidate) who is running to represent the Springfield District on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.  She is a very strong candidate, referred to by the Washington Post as a "strong Democratic challenger" to her opponent, an entrenched three-term incumbent.

Fairfax County, which is located in Northern Virginia (just outside of Washington D.C.), is home to 1.2 million residents and over 100,000 businesses (including nine Fortune 500 companies).  Fairfax County is governed by a ten-member Board of Supervisors, who represent each of the county's nine magisterial districts (and one at-large Chair).

The Springfield District is quite large—it is home to 89,000 registered voters and stretches across a vast stretch of land in the Western/Southwestern portion of the county.  Historically, the Springfield District has been "reliably red" however demographic shifts have seen the district voting for Democrats in local elections for nearly ten years.  Winning this election will mean flipping the Springfield District Supervisor's seat from R to D for the first time since 1972 and removing one of only two remaining Republican Supervisors on the Board.  This will require a lot of voter outreach, which means that this will also require a lot of money, but will be quite the feather in the cap of the campaign manager responsible for this incredible accomplishment… which is where you come in.

We are seeking an experienced Campaign Manager to serve as the brains and logistical overlord for the campaign.  The campaign manager will craft the campaign plan and then be responsible for implementing it:  the field, finance, marketing and communications, community outreach, managing staff and volunteers, managing the candidate, and generally making sure that the trains run on time.

Key Responsibilities:

  • ·        Direct and oversee the day-to-day operations of the campaign including finance, field and communications.
  • ·        Craft, update and execute a strategic campaign plan with measurable goals and benchmarks.
  • ·        Manage/ensure execution of all necessary aspects of finance plan/campaign budget.
  • ·        Assist the candidate with tasks related to fundraising/call time/events.
  • ·        Schedule AND manage the candidate's time properly.
  • ·        Manage any and all campaign staff, volunteers and interns.
  • ·        Maintain relationships/communications with multiple constituency groups and political leaders
  • ·        Mobilize volunteers for direct voter outreach/GOTV operation
  • ·        Manage the communications operations directly: social media, digital media, earned media, etc.
  • ·        Draft communication, endorsement, and outreach materials as needed.
  • ·        Other duties as assigned (come on…it's a local political campaign.  There's no way everything can be encapsulated into a few bullet points).

Ideal Skills & Experience

  • ·        At least 2-3 years of progressively responsible campaign experience in multiple areas (i.e. not just field, or finance, or communications)
  • ·        Experience in finance operations very, very strongly preferred (especially call time), along with knowledge of campaign funding sources.
  • ·        Previous experience in competitive elections in large districts.
  • ·        Comfort in a fast-paced work environment and ready and willing to solve unforeseen challenges with speed and efficiency.
  • ·        Ability to problem-solve independently, take creative approaches to meet goals and exercise sound judgement
  • ·        Excellent organizational and managerial skills, high attention to detail, works well under tight deadlines
  • ·        Strong overall communication skills—not only writing and speaking skills but strong interpersonal skills as well.
  • ·        Willingness to work collaboratively with supporters, staff, volunteers and community members to motivate everyone to accomplish primary objectives is required.
  • ·        Proficiency using NGP, VAN, Microsoft Office, Google Docs, email marketing and website management tools.
  • ·        Ability and desire to work extensive hours and over weekends
  • ·        An excellent sense of humor
  • ·        Cool with small kids (Linda has two, so you will be around them a lot)
  • ·        A valid driver's license, vehicle, laptop, and smartphone
  • ·        Previous campaign experience in Northern Virginia/Fairfax County would be awesome.

Start Date: Desired start date is Q1 2019 (election is Nov 5 2019).  The sooner the better, but we would rather hold out for the ideal campaign manager who can help steer us to victory in November.

Position Type: Full-time

Salary: Competitive monthly rate commensurate with experience
