Working Families is a progressive political organization that fights for an economy that works for all of us and a democracy in which every voice matters. We believe that our children's life chances must not be determined at birth and that America must be a nation that allows all its people to thrive. We fight to elect strong progressive advocates and advance legislation that will reduce inequality and improve the quality of life for people living in Black, Brown, undocumented, and White lower-income and working-class communities.

We are an anchor group in the new Birth to Three for All DC Coalition (B3DC), which is organizing across the District for policies and city funding that support infants, young children, and their families so they can thrive and that also work to end the inequities confronting poor children from before birth. This position's primary focus will be on organizing grassroots engagement for this campaign, but it will also support Working Families' other organizing efforts.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Participate in the development and facilitation of diverse and powerful coalition working on B3DC and other legislative campaigns

  • Support the drafting and implementation of campaign plans for specific projects

  • Conduct outreach to parents and other caretakers, low-wage workers, faith and community leaders, small business owners, and allied advocates who will become spokespeople for our campaigns

  • Participate in the development of compelling narratives around our campaigns and ensure all actions and messaging reinforce our brand and values

  • Sign up active members as monthly sustainers and play a key leadership role in designing, implementing,  and executing work around aggressive fundraising goals

  • Work to build membership capacity and political power with close allies across grassroots organizations, social movement groups, and independent political organizations

Requirements:

  • At least two years of experience in community organizing, union organizing, issue advocacy, or electoral campaign work that engages the public

  • Experience in developing a grassroots membership base and  executing field programs

  • Proven skills in working and communicating with diverse communities, especially with working class and poor communities of color

  • A commitment to a progressive vision of racial, social, and economic justice and deep understanding of how these intersect

  • The ability to communicate in plain language about sometimes complex policies and legislative initiatives

  • The ability to plan and manage complex projects and meet deadlines

  • The ability to communicate and work effectively within a team and in partnership with other organizations

  • The ability to be comfortable in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

  • The drive to try innovative tactics and experiment with new forms of organizing

  • Experience in developing and carrying out aggressive fundraising campaigns and meeting ambitious, high-dollar goals

Preferred, but not required:

  • Familiarity with early childhood development issues, either through lived experience or an understanding of policy
