Internships

Location: National NOW Action Center, 1100 H Street NW, Suite 300, Washington, D.C.

The National Organization for Women is the largest grassroots organization of feminist activists in the United States. NOW has hundreds of thousands of contributing supporters and members in chapters in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Since ​its​ founding in 1966, NOW's purpose is to take action through intersectional grassroots activism to promote feminist ideals, lead societal change, eliminate discrimination, and achieve and protect the equal rights of all women and girls in all aspects of social, political, and economic life.

Each semester NOW interns participate in a wide range of activities that provide them with the tools and knowledge to become activist leaders, such as:

  • Frequent opportunities to organize and attend Congressional and U.S. Supreme Court hearings, press conferences, demonstrations, and rallies
  • Writing blog posts about current feminist and social justice issues
  • Attending NOW 101s: workshops with staff focusing on feminist issues and professional development
  • Lobbying members of Congress to support key legislation
  • Engaging with NOW's grassroots members
  • *Summer interns attend and staff NOW's annual conference

Duties

Interns will work with one of the following four teams: President's Office and PAC (Political Action Committee)
    President's Office and PAC interns will learn firsthand how a grassroots activist organization works by working directly with NOW's Coordinator of President's Office and Political Director.
    • Attend meetings relating to NOW's strategic planning, policies, and initiatives
    • Assist in planning rallies and any other NOW events
    • Play an integral role in the internship vetting, interviewing, and hiring process
    • Research candidates' records on women's rights issues and process endorsement requests
    • Attend PAC related meetings
    • Interns will have the opportunity to be involved with NOW's PAC organizing
Communications and National Action Program
    Communications and National Action Program (NAP) interns are responsible for assisting with all social media related material. Interns will also research, draft, and edit articles for NOW's various publications. Interns also aid the NAP Team in implementing NOW's national action campaigns. They help research, create, and distribute activist material to NOW's state organizations and local chapters.
    • Help manage social media pages for NOW: moderating comments, creating weekly content focused on the news, historical events, and activist campaigns
    • Analyze social media data and performance
    • Draft policy-focused materials for activist toolkits and create content for campaign microsites
    • Track media hits and update press clips on website
    • Research new legislation and policy recommendations relevant to the National Action Program
    • Attend activist events related to the NAP campaigns and take photographs when appropriate
Government Relations/Public Policy
    Interns assist the director in extensive research and writing tasks relating to legislation, issues, and NOW actions. Interns will also attend coalition meetings, Congressional briefings, and hearings, and report back to staff.
    • Keeping track of current legislation and news stories
    • Conduct daily research on a variety of women's issues, and write memos or briefs on various legislation and events that pertain to NOW
    • Write informational blog posts that educate the online community on NOW's positions on a variety of issues, including: women's reproductive rights, economic justice, racial justice, and constitutional equality
    • Attend and report on Capitol Hill briefings
Development and Operations
    Fundraising and Development interns will learn highly marketable skills for the non-profit world by assisting the Fundraising Manager to retain and expand our donor base and improve NOW's diverse fundraising efforts.
    • Draft and proofread content for donor communications
    • Research potential foundation and individual support, and update profiles in the donor database
    • Manage aspects of the donor acknowledgement program
    • Log information on donor estates and trusts
    • Participate in weekly thank you calls with NOW's president
    • Develop and update National NOW resources for chapter leaders and members
    • Fulfill chapters' orders and requests for signs and supplies
    • Assist with chapter inquiries and other requests
    • Reach out to and maintain ongoing communication with our high school clubs and Campus Action Networks

Qualifications

Prospective interns should be hard-working, enthusiastic and flexible individuals who possess or seek a working knowledge of women's issues and feminist organizing. Interns should also be committed to continuing to struggle for equality and justice once they leave the internship program and return to their communities.

Salary

Fall and Spring semester: NOW pays a stipend of up to $330 per month for Fall/Spring interns to offset travel and meal expenses associated with the internship. A minimum of three days, or 24 hours, per week is preferred. A minimum commitment of 10 weeks is required. Summer semester: NOW pays a stipend of up to $500 per month for Summer interns to offset travel and meal expenses associated with the internship. A minimum of four days, or 32 hours, per week is preferred. A minimum commitment of 10 weeks is required. Summer interns are also required to attend and staff NOW's annual conference.
