[jobsthatareLEFT by GAIN] JOB: Movement Capacity Building Strategist, Criminal Justice - Chan Zuckerberg Initiative

Founded by Dr. Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg in 2015, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) is a new kind of philanthropy that's leveraging technology to help solve some of the world's toughest challenges – from eradicating disease, to improving education, to reforming the criminal justice system. Across three core Initiative focus areas of Science, Education and Justice and Opportunity,  we're pairing engineering with grantmaking, impact investing, policy work, and movement building, to help build an inclusive, just and healthy future for everyone.

Our Values

We believe we can help build a future for everyone.

  • We aim to be daring, but humble:  We look for bold ideas — regardless of structure and stage — and help them scale by pairing engineers with subject matter experts to build tools that accelerate the pace of social progress.
  • We want to learn fast, but build for the long-term: We want to iterate fast and help bring new solutions to the table, but we also realize that important breakthroughs often take decades, or even centuries.
  • Stay close to the real problems: We engage directly in the communities we serve because no one understands our society's challenges like those who live them every day.

Our success is dependent on building teams that include people from different backgrounds and experiences who can challenge each other's assumptions with fresh perspectives. To that end, we look for a diverse pool of applicants including those from historically marginalized groups — women, people with disabilities, people of color, formerly incarcerated people, people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or gender nonconforming, first and second generation immigrants, veterans, and people from different socioeconomic backgrounds.

The Opportunity

The Movement Capacity Building Strategist will work closely with the Director for Movement Capacity Building and Criminal Justice Program team to help Criminal Justice reform movements build real power and achieve strategic goals. The Strategist will foster collaboration with movement leaders and organizations to provide ecosystems of advocates, grantees, and stakeholders with the support to generate strategy, build infrastructure, and create lasting change.

In partnership with our Criminal Justice team, the Strategist will be responsible for developing and executing a Movement Capacity Building strategy for our partner organizations. They will also oversee contractors to create curriculum, facilitate ongoing training cohorts, execute multi-stakeholder convenings, and share best practices. The first project this team member will embark on will be focused on building power in movements led by Formerly Incarcerated People across the United States.

The Strategist will play a core role in the creation of this new portfolio that will change the way philanthropy works within movements and empowers communities.

The ideal candidate will be energetic, organized, detail-oriented, flexible, positive, passionate, a problem solver, possess excellent communication and relationship-building skills, and be able to adjust to the changing demands of the job.

This candidate should also have a strong focus on movements and a clear organizing philosophy, as well as experience working on capacity building with leaders and grassroots activists. Experience in solidarity building and facilitation is required; experience in philanthropy and/or the tech sector is a plus but not required.

You will

  • Drive capacity building projects and convenings through scoping, planning, execution, and post-project analysis
  • Manage contractors ensuring timelines are met with a high quality product
  • Drive the crafting of curriculums, geek squads, and training venues
  • Monitor project progress, proactively identify potential problems, and build project teams to meet needs
  • Interact with outside partners, respectfully engaging them in strategy development, execution, and post-project analysis
  • Maintain a broad view of work across criminal justice issue areas and ensure there is high collaboration and quality in process and product
  • Remove blockers on a given effort or guide the team to remove blockers
  • Assist in defining, templating, and driving collection of metrics and reports
  • Manage communication across project teams, improving transparency, and consolidating information
  • Research, prepare, and organize materials to be used for various reports, meetings, and presentations, both internally and externally

You have

  • 5+ years experience working as a program or project manager successfully driving time-sensitive, cross-functional projects
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience managing multiple staff or contractors
  • Ability to lead, collaborate, and work with a diverse team across various geographies
  • Strong time management skills with ability to multi-task across projects
  • Exceptional relationship-building skills, organizational awareness, and ability to persuade others to accomplish project objectives
  • Ability to work with highly-technical staff and grassroots/community-based partners alike
  • Experience working within the Criminal Justice Reform field strongly preferred
