[jobsthatareLEFT by GAIN] JOB: Chief of Staff, MoveOn (Anywhere in the Continental US)

Chief of Staff

MoveOn is a community of millions of members working together to create progressive change in America. We organize to challenge entrenched power and push back against right-wing policies, while pursuing economic, racial, and social justice and a vision of a country in which everyone can thrive.

MoveOn has a particularly important role to play in the Trump era. We are working to defeat Donald Trump and the GOP in 2020 by building a powerful, multiracial, and economic populist movement that will give voters something to vote for, not just against—and we're also working to defend communities that are on the front lines of Trump and GOP attacks, including immigrants, people of color, the LGBTQ community, and women. In service of that mission, in 2019, 2020, and beyond, MoveOn will drive impactful, movement-connected, multichannel, nimble campaigns aimed at impact.

We are looking for a seasoned organizational leader to support our new Executive Director in shaping the top priorities for the organization and managing their implementation in close coordination with the senior team. The CoS both provides strategic counsel and guidance to the ED and plays a significant high-level project management and evaluation role to ensure that the organization is executing effectively on its priorities.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the Executive Director in setting organizational vision and strategy and managing the organization to achieve its organizational and programmatic priorities

  • Work with the Chief of People and Organizational Development to lead and oversee longer-term strategic planning processes, developing clear processes that engage the staff, boards, members and key partner organizations

  • Shape and consult on the program work of the organization

  • Ensure strong collaboration among teams and staff to drive program, maximize impact and nurture organizational health

  • Create and support spaces and practice in the organization to debrief and learn from our work and the movement

  • Serve as a thought partner and sounding board to the Executive Director, other senior leaders and a resource for all staff to voice ideas, suggestions and/or concerns

  • Organize convenings of and communications between senior staff and cross-org bodies to ensure strong internal coordination and alignment, surface questions and concerns; ensure that we have the right makeup of cross-organizational bodies, with an eye toward equity

  • Refine and maintain internal communication processes, systems, and norms to ensure that staff have the information they need and have clear ways of providing feedback into organizational decisions, and work is managed and executed transparently.

  • Act as a surrogate for the ED both internally and externally as needed with key external stakeholders (e.g. partners, the press, donors, etc)

  • Partner closely with the Executive Director and the Special Assistant to the ED to ensure that the ED's time aligns with priorities

  • Manage special projects that arise related to organizational health, change management, and program

Qualifications:

  • At least 3-5 years of organizational-level leadership experience in an advocacy campaigning and/or electoral context with a proven track record of setting, supporting, and leading a team, teams or organization in achieving priorities

  • Deep understanding of and commitment to organizational equity, and experience managing to implement equitable practices and culture, and demonstrated track record of success in this area

  • Acts with high integrity, professionalism, low ego, and camaraderie

  • Preferably at least 1-2 years or 1-2 electoral cycles digital campaigning and organizing experience

  • Demonstrated leadership skills, especially in relation to aligning multiple departments and/or stakeholders outside of their line management

  • Significant experience working across an organization to achieve complex goals
