The Opportunity
Tusk Philanthropies is seeking a Director of Partnerships and Outreach to focus on college campus outreach and coalition building amongst voting, youth civic engagement, disability, and military advocacy groups for the Mobile Voting Project.
In collaboration with the President of Tusk Philanthropies, the Director will lead efforts to translate Tusk Philanthropies' vision for increased electoral participation through mobile voting into a reality by building support amongst young college students in the U.S. and establishing partnerships with key stakeholders in the voting and elections space. The Director should have experience managing or working on advocacy and/or political campaigns and possess the skills to build and sustain teams on college campuses and coalitions across issue areas and constituencies. The ideal candidate will be both a visionary who has creative ideas for engagement and a "chess master" strategist with an organizer's sensibility.
About Us
Tusk Philanthropies is focused on two things: making sure people who are hungry have enough food to eat and fixing our democracy by making it exponentially easier to vote. The first is a short-term problem we tackle every year by running legislation in states to expand funding for programs like school breakfast. The second is a long-term initiative to allow people to vote in elections using their smartphones. We all know our government and democracy is fundamentally broken. We believe the only way to fix it is by making sure politicians have to represent all voters, and not just the handful who currently vote in primaries and/or donate money.
Requirements
The Director will run two sides of the campaign: student engagement and coalition building with allied organizations. The Director will recruit students and student groups to advocate for mobile voting on college campuses and beyond by developing an ambassador program and building partnerships with relevant student groups on campuses across the country. The Director will need to use creative tactics to tackle roadblocks like political apathy, student transitions (e.g. graduation), and difficulty connecting with students to ensure that knowledge of and engagement with the Mobile Voting Project grows. In addition to college campuses, the Director will be responsible for identifying and building long-term partnerships with nonpartisan voting, youth civic engagement, disability, military, and other allied advocacy groups that can support the creation of a grassroots movement to support mobile voting as a viable option to increase voter engagement and turnout in American elections.
Preferred Experience
• 5+ years of experience in grassroots and/or campus organizing, coalition building, issue-based and/or legislative advocacy.
• Track record of building and maintaining local, state, and institutional relationships with a diverse array of people.
• Ability to identify, recruit, develop, and mentor student and grassroots leaders to build their skills and commitment and inspire their best work and build effective and sustainable campus teams and coalitions.
• Demonstrated success at keeping multiple projects organized; strong short- and long-term planning, administrative, time-management skills; comfort working in a fast-paced campaign environment.
• Experience in engaging online community members into real life action and scaling up organizing and recruitment efforts.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and navigate complex policies or relationships with attention to detail.
• Competency in a range of applications, such as NationBuilder, Office & Google Suites, and a variety of social media platforms to support our organizing work.
