The Reform LA County Jails Campaign is hiring top-quality Community Organizers for its campaign in the upcoming 2020 election cycle. The campaign will run a community-based program that will focus on ensuring voters are educated on the ballot initiative and that the initiative passes on March 3, 2020.  

 

Community Organizers are responsible for building a political network and executing our strategy to win and will report directly to the Deputy Campaign Manager for Organizing. The position is located in Los Angeles County, and will require travel around the county. The pay is competitive.

 

Los Angeles is the most progressive county in the country and the Reform LA County Jails team is excited about the prospects of setting national precedent for jail systems across the nation through this ballot initiative. In September of 2018, Reform LA Jails submitted 240,000 signatures to the County Board of Supervisors - 100,000 more than what was required - to ensure that in March of 2020 this initiative would appear on the ballot. Voters in Los Angeles County will not only have the opportunity to say with one voice that their loved ones who struggle with mental illness deserve treatment, not incarceration, but the Civilian Oversight Committee will be granted subpoena power, allowing it to independently investigate deputy misconduct and be empowered to develop a plan which will investigate how to reduce jail populations and invest in alternatives to incarceration.  Interested candidates should email a short cover letter and resume to brittany@bowersconsulting.com with the subject line "[Name]- Community Organizer."

 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

·      Implementing the field plan

·      Recruiting, training, and managing volunteers, activists, to participate in grassroots activities such as door-to-door, phone banking and early voting to persuade and turn out voters the March election

·      Reaching volunteer recruitment goals

·      Reaching supporter identification goals

·      Training volunteers one-on-one and in group trainings

·      Planning and managing surrogate events

·      Generating public awareness and support by engaging with new, grassroots, and social media

·      Developing relationships with key political players and opinion leaders, and allied organizations and coalitions to build our base of support in the county

·      Coordinating with allied coalitions

Qualifications:

·       Political campaign experience in support of an issue, initiative, or candidate campaign

·       Goal-orientation and willingness to hold self-accountable

·       Willingness to travel to attend trainings and events

·       Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

·       Excellent personal, verbal, and written communication skills 

·       Ability to work quickly and cooperatively under pressure and meet deadlines 

·       Ability to work well with coalitions and the staff and leadership of allied organizations 

·       Energetic outlook and commitment to the mission and grassroots approach to change 

·       A team orientation that combines collegiality and creativity to drive and motivate others 

·       Candidates for this position should have one or more years of relevant professional experience

·       Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to successfully relate to voters and volunteers from a wide range of backgrounds. About the Initiative:

Reform L.A. Jails is a committee formed to support a 2020 county-wide ballot initiative to grant the L.A. County Sheriff's Department Civilian Oversight Commission with subpoena power to effectively and independently investigate misconduct and to develop a plan to reduce jail populations and to redirect the cost savings into alternatives to incarceration. Reform L.A. Jails represents a coalition of citizens, community leaders, businesses, and organizations that recognize we need a more effective strategy to reduce recidivism, prevent crime, and permanently reduce the population of people cycling in and out of jail that are experiencing mental health, drug dependency, or chronic homelessness issues.
