COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR

Job Announcement


The LA Black Worker Center (LABWC) seeks a Communications Coordinator who is ready to make history while working with the first Black Worker Center in California,an emerginlead voice on Black work and economic justice in the nationThe Communications Coordinator will help build worker power to eradicate the Black job crisis in Los Angeles by providing effective messaging and communication tools that support direct action campaigns and community organizing.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

• Advance campaign to shift the narrative of Black workers' contribution to the social and economic future of California.
• Build confidence and storytelling skills among grassroots leaders and members to be spokespeople for public hearings, press conferences, and interviews;
• Develop and drive communication plans that advance LABWC vision, mission and goals using internal and external communications approaches;
• Produce content including leaflets, website content, emails, news releases, fact sheets, talking points, and ads;
• Design brochures or invitations for events or community projects;
• Collaborate with organizing, program staff, and grassroots committees to develop and lead communications strategies that support worker organizing and advance our strategic vision;
• Document key member actions and events through photos and videos;
• Post regular updates on social media platforms and maintain the LABWC website;
• Monitor and post media coverage related to news or issues that affect or involve our members;
• Participate in the LABWC programs, campaigns, rallies, and events; 
• Maintain archive of LABWC literature, story bank, media clippings and photo library of events;
• Participate in committee of member leaders and guideopportunities for members' growth and development relevant to organizational communications program
• Cultivate and maintain media relationships
• Operate database for targeted worker/member engagement via "eBlast", mass mail

Qualifications: Qualified applicants must demonstrate a commitment to social and economic justice, and building collective power for workers. Work a flexible schedule, someevenings and weekends as needed, and have the ability to work independently. Preferred qualities and experience:

• Experience working in Black working class communities and a deep appreciation of Black culture, history, and direct action.
• Proficient with NationBuilderCanva; excellent writing, proofreading, desktop publishing, verbal, visual/ graphic communications skills.
• Able to pitch stories and cultivate media relationships.
• Excellent skills in conducting interviews and creatively tell human-interest stories.
• Two or more years' experience in writing leaflets, newsletters, social media platforms, and similar communications preferred.
• Knowledgeable of using social media tools to communicate union message, a plus.
• Understanding of social and economic justice issues facing underrepresented Black workers and LA's low-incomecommunities.
• Experience with membership outreach and development, and/or volunteer organizing.
• Strong community outreach, organizing and engagement experience preferred.
• Experience working with labor unionsstrongly preferred.
• Valid California driver's license, automobile, and evidence of automobile liability insurance.

 

Compensation: Full-time position, annual salary depending on experience, plus a generous benefit package.
