American Progress has an immediate opening for a Policy Analyst or Senior Policy Analyst for the Poverty to Prosperity Program. The analyst will work under the direction of the Senior Director of Poverty Policy to promote policies that dramatically reduce poverty and increase economic mobility. This position will work on income assistance and support programs, tax credits, labor policy, and disability policy, among other policy areas. The analyst will also collaborate with other American Progress teams such as Race and Ethnicity, Economic Policy, Health Care, Criminal Justice, and others as needed. Successful candidates will have strong quantitative, analytic, and writing skills, as well as the ability to work well on a team and in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities:
- Generate new quantitative analyses and develop policy ideas to drive American Progress' mission and goals.
- Write and edit accessible op-eds, columns, briefs, and reports that translate complex policies and analyses into digestible information for different audiences.
- Manage projects independently to meet deadlines.
- Develop rapid response materials, including analyses and talking points, on tight deadlines.
- Conduct policy research on a range of topics related to poverty, economic mobility, and labor markets, and interpret qualitative and quantitative research.
- Interface formally and informally with media, external groups, and policymakers and their staff.
- Collaborate with other team members to develop strategies to ensure that products and messages reach target audiences.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements and qualifications:
- An advanced degree, such as an M.A., M.P.P, or M.P.H., is preferred in a public policy or economics discipline or in a specialized policy area that has significant overlap with poverty policy, such as education or public health, or equivalent experience.
- Three to five years of professional experience in policy, government, or nonprofit work is strongly preferred but not required.
- Strong ability to manipulate and analyze data, including large data sets. Strong Excel skills are required, and comfort using statistical software such as Stata or R is strongly preferred.
- Strong writing skills and a proven record of producing written products on a short timeline.
- Knowledge of or strong demonstrated interest in federal and/or state poverty and economic policy.
- Knowledge of domestic income assistance, support programs, and low-wage labor policy is a plus.
- Strong ability to conceptualize problems and develop analyses and policy recommendations.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to initiate projects and balance multiple projects at once.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well on a team.
- Knowledge of and/or strong interest in federal policymaking and legislative processes.
- Commitment to American Progress' mission and goals.
