The Voting Rights Lab is a campaign hub designed to supercharge the fight against voter suppression and build more equitable voting systems. In partnership with organizations across the country, we work to build winning state legislative campaigns to secure, protect, and defend the voting rights of all Americans.

We are looking for a Communications Associate to join the Campaigns & Partnerships team at the Voting Rights Lab. The Communications Associate will work closely with the rest of our team to draft press materials, build and maintain press lists, and assist in other tasks that support and advance our communications goals.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Come up with creative tactics to help state-level communications break through in a crowded media environment; draft press releases, letters to the editor, op-eds, talking points and other materials for media outreach
  • Provide communications support to campaign partners in traditional and digital mobilization including collateral creation, sharing press lists, trainings, and other support
  • Manage VRL's social media accounts by curating content, writing posts, and posting on a semi-regular basis; help maintain the organization's website and ensure content is up to date
  • Create and maintain media contact lists by state as well as for national outlets; help maintain relationships with state-level media contacts
  • Monitor state and national news as it relates to voting rights issues; create and maintain systems for collecting, organizing and sharing press clips
  • Package and uplift stories of people who are impacted by attacks on voting rights, with an emphasis on building and maintaining relationships with diverse storytellers
  • Connect storytellers from impacted communities with media opportunities
  • Provide support in building press events by drafting materials, issuing advisories, and working to secure press attendance
What we're looking for in you:
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in communications with a proven track record of executing high quality work in a fast-paced campaign environment (issue advocacy or political campaigns are fine)
  • Experience communicating complex policy ideas in a way that helps audiences understand and relate to them
  • A high degree of comfort with long and short-form writing
  • A snappy content creator who is comfortable working in a fast-paced, campaign environment
  • Fluency with social media platforms and social media content production
  • Organized, resourceful, flexible individual with strong time management skills and an ability to work independently and on tight deadlines
  • Strong campaign content creator who can work across different states and political contexts
  • An ability to draft press outreach materials in different tones for use across multiple audiences
  • Experience working with diverse communities and committed to acting on the belief that racial equity and social justice are critical components of our work
  • Speech writing experience, familiarity with media databases, Spanish language proficiency, and issue-advocacy experience are desired but not required
Details: The Voting Rights Lab is a virtual organization. Candidates can be based anywhere in the United States and will work from a home office or local co-working space. The job entails some travel. You will report to the Director of Campaigns & Partnerships. This is a full-time salaried position.

Salary and benefits: The annual salary range for the full-time position is $60,000 to $70,000 depending on experience. We also offer health benefits including medical, vision and dental coverage, a retirement plan, 25 days paid time off annually, and as well as paid holidays including Dec 24 to Jan 1. We offer ongoing training opportunities and a dynamic and collaborative work environment.
