Detroit Action is a grassroots membership based organization that fights for political, economic and social justice for low and moderate income Detroiters. Position Overview: The responsibilities of the Organizing Director include, but are not limited to: 
● Reporting directly to the Executive Director and will be accountable for the successful completion of all matters and outcomes associated with the organizing program ● Working as a member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and with hired consultants to plan, develop and execute team goals for base building and campaign development 
● Hiring, training and supervising six full time organizing staff, including leads to execute the successful completion of base building and campaign goals ● Creating individual1-on-1's, goals, and professional development plans for each supervisee 
● Supervising staff work plans to create actions, training and mobilization opportunities in order to activate members and activists ● Creating work plans and timelines to ensure the engagement, activation and retention of new members, volunteer team development, and executing campaign strategy ● Ensuring staff alignment with values and mission of the organization 
● Participating in internal team meetings to report outcomes associated with the organizing program. This includes but is not limited to SLT meetings and weekly all staff team meetings 
● Conducting staff one on ones and professional development trainings 
● Working with organizers to plan regular membership meetings with a standing agenda, and activities supporting new leaders to facilitate peer engagement and immediate activation 
● Managing database systems and ensuring accurate reporting practices to mobilize, track and engage members, activists and event attendees 
● Working with the Canvass for Power team director to coordinate the timely follow-up of identified leads and activists for base building. These efforts should produce one on one meetings to build strong relationships, identify and develop leaders into clear membership roles 
● Developing the political consciousness of the affiliate organizations' leaders through education, reflection, leadership development and development of appropriate educational materials
 QUALIFICATIONS: To be successful, the Organizing Director must: 
● Have a commitment to social justice, and a belief that those directly affected by issues in society must be at the forefront of changing them. 
● Organizing is a practice, and the ideal candidate must be dedicated to all aspects of it to be successful – recruitment, leadership development, mobilization and reflection ● Have experience leading and developing organizers (volunteer or paid) 
● Candidate should have a minimum of 3 years of supervision and direct management experience in social movement, political engagement or related field 
● Be an effective and compassionate communicator 
● Have a minimum of 2 years experience developing issue committees and can demonstrate successful campaign wins for social change 
● Demonstrate the willingness to provide hands on leadership to coach, and train and develop staff. This includes:shadowing organizers during daily practices, phone banking and canvassing 
● Have a demonstrated commitment to taking action to improve your community or to address specific problems
 ● Ability to demonstrate and understanding of issues faced by low income people is preferred 
● The ideal candidate must have the ability to think strategically, make decisions, and be organized 
● Candidates with Detroit/Michigan experience and/or people of color strongly encouraged to apply
