Greenpeace is a global, independent campaigning organization that uses peaceful protest and creative communication to expose global environmental problems and promote solutions that are essential to a green and peaceful future. Greenpeace USA (GPUS) is hiring an Activist Training Program Manager to be responsible for coordinating and implementing a comprehensive, dynamic and energetic activist program that identifies, trains, and develops capable volunteers for participation in Greenpeace non-violent direct actions.

This position will be located in Washington, DC or Oakland, CA and will report to the Action Unit Head Director based in Washington, DC.

This role will:

  • Provide direct line management for Activist Program staff and maintain a high standard of performance for staff and hold staff accountable to work-plans and Program
  • Manage the Activist Program core budget. Develop and manage project budgets.
  • Oversee the Activist and Training and Development Program.
  • Responsible for logistical planning, preparation, coordination and execution of direct actions, direct communications, protests, investigations, tours, ship-based actions and other interventions.
  • Ensure that all personnel in direct actions strictly apply to health and safety procedures.
  • Conduct thorough risk assessments and risk mitigation plans for field activities. Manage risks (life and limb, organizational, budget, and reputational) in real-time through development and deployment of activities.
  • Maintain and develop excellent relations with the direct actions staff throughout all Greenpeace offices and across the progressive movement. .
  • On occasion represent Greenpeace to the media, authorities, allies or opponents.
  • Perform any other job-related duties as assigned by the Actions Director.

Minimum requirements include:

  • Five years of working in a campaigning organization.
  • Experience working with and managing activists and/or activist networks.
  • Experience as a trainer in one or more of: non-violent direct action, boat driving, climbing and rope access, blockades, art in activism/prop building, field research, anti-oppression/collective liberation,.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, and the ability to connect with cross section of society/diverse groups: cultures, age groups, etc.
  • Experience in coordinating and/or team leading in direct actions and/or experience in managing large teams of people in complex and stressful situations.
  • Commitment to non-violence and skilled in conflict resolution
  • Current driver license
  • Ability and willingness to travel extensively
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience facilitating meetings effectively
  • Keen attention to detail with ability to track, prioritize and manage multiple projects at one time
  • General computer literacy – Especially proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint as well as the Google suite of products
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and facilitate the completion of complex projects in a timely manner, including meeting strict deadlines and budgets
  • Familiarity working with organizational budgets
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience building strong working relationships with team members at a variety of levels in an organization
  • Self-starter with demonstrated ability to work both independently and within a team
