Full Time, Temporary (January 2020 - January 2021)

 

Color Of Change is running an innovative online and offline organizing program to build leadership and power in Black communities across the country. This organizing program is about empowering Black people to hold elected officials accountable to their communities and building political power in Black communities while centering Black Joy. If that sounds strategic and exciting to you, please apply.

 

The Digital and Communications Team is a key part of this organizing program, designing ways to tell the story of our collective work and grow our brand's presence through creative channels, paid and earned media, social media, and public communications.  The Social Media Manager will be responsible for leading the Color Of Change's strategic communications efforts and helping to elevate the powerful stories of our members, staff and our campaigns.

 

This person will work to develop, promote, and monitor online content across digital channels and social media properties to engage online supporters, mobilize Black voters, and the media. This position requires a motivated individual with excellent communication skills, demonstrated ability to keep up with the 24-hour news cycle, attention to detail, and a believer in racial justice.

 

This position reports to the Deputy Senior Campaign Director and responsibilities include:

  • Assist with the development and deployment of a communications strategy and collateral for online and offline organizing activities
  • Develop and manage paid message testing on relevant social channels to target ads around COC campaigns (i.e. 2020 Census and 2020 primary and presidential election)
  • Create and manage social media content, including writing original tweets, Facebook and Instagram posts and Medium blog posts
  • Assist in rapid response social strategy and identify digital opportunities to leverage breaking news and the 24-hour news cycle to grow COC's social media audience
  • Draft and execute social media content and strategy, particularly around rapid response, 2020 election races and endorsed candidate
  • Plan and capture live photos and video at COC events to follow through with social posts, such as Instagram stories and Twitter threads
  • Develop and help maintain and enforce the editorial style and brand guidelines (tone, voice, grammar, etc.)
  • Identify, recommend and initiate the use of new, emerging digital technology to mobilize Black voters online and build engagement tools for the Digital + Democracy team
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • Exceptional writing, editing, and presentation skills and a demonstrated ability to write in different styles and for a variety of audiences.
  • Strong sense of urgency and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and work independently as well as a member of a team.
  • Top-notch organization skills. Managing multiple priorities, timeliness, and attention to detail is key.
  • Strong familiarity with social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Buffer, Hootsuite, Sprout Social, Tweetdeck, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter media studio and social media analytics software such as Google Analytics.
  • Flexibility with work schedule; this position requires frequent evening and weekend work to respond to breaking news;
  • Ability to effectively use a Black/racial justice frame of reference to write strong and persuasive strategic plans and program development materials.
  • A commitment to civil rights and racial justice.
  • 3-5 years of media relations or communications experience
  • Previous electoral or issue campaign experience (at least 1 cycle)

 

Compensation: $72,000. This is a full-time, temporary position (ending in January 2021).
