Community Organizer- Massachusetts
Mothers Out Front seeks two experienced organizers to engage and support mothers and caregivers -- particularly in communities of color and low-income communities -- to lead local and statewide campaigns for climate justice. We have passionate member-led teams across Massachusetts advocating for a swift transition away from fossil fuels towards clean and renewable energy and running powerful campaigns, including powerful initiatives like our Beyond Gas campaign. As a community organizer with Mothers Out Front, you will be a key part of important initiatives such as a statewide campaign to stop the expansion of gas infrastructure in Massachusetts. One important campaign involves a push to stop the construction of a compressor station on the South Shore, which poses significant health and safety risks to surrounding neighborhoods in Quincy and Weymouth, and which already bear the brunt of environmental injustice. You will ensure elected officials develop the political will to stop these dangerous proposals and instead prioritize and fund clean energy alternatives. You will help us focus resources particularly in those communities who suffer the injustices of climate change and fossil fuel use today and have been historically marginalized, with an emphasis on communities in Boston and Quincy.
About Mothers Out Front:
Mothers Out Front builds our power as mothers to ensure a liveable climate for all children. We are building a diverse national movement of mothers, grandmothers, and caregivers dedicated to convincing elected officials and business leaders to work for a swift, complete, and just transition away from fossil fuels to clean and renewable energy. We know that mothers have an important role to play in the climate change movement, and, when it comes to protecting their children, mothers are an unstoppable force for change! Our goal is simple: to enable mothers to take active leadership in climate change work, by providing the structure, training, and tools for them to work together on campaigns in their communities and at the statewide level. We are a member-led, national organization that is growing quickly. Founded in 2013, we currently have staff currently working in eight states and are a fast growing organization with no plans of slowing down.
The job:
During this period of growth and urgency around the climate crisis, we are seeking organizers who can help build a diverse movement. As an organizer, you will support member leaders in Massachusetts and your responsibilities could include:
Recruiting and developing the skills of grassroots leaders to lead campaigns around energy and climate;
Forming and supporting collaborative teams of mothers and caregivers, building their capacity to work across class, race, cultural and age differences;
Building a new community organizing team in Quincy, a community on the frontlines of the climate crisis and the possibility of working with new teams in the Boston area;
Developing campaign strategy with teams led by volunteer mothers;
Executing campaign actions at the state and local level;
Coordinating trainings to build community leadership skills;
Contributing to the growth and power of Mothers Out Front by tracking metrics in our database, teaching volunteers to use the database, and building our paid membership program.
Providing strategic advice, training, and support for new and existing teams around: developing strategic local and statewide campaign plans and materials, and setting and helping to meet goals. This includes developing an understanding of the political landscape locally and statewide.
Supporting members of Mothers Out Front in developing relationships with a diverse mix of allied organizations and community leaders, including environmental and public health groups; social justice organizations; organizations representing communities of color and different ethnic populations; mothers and parent groups; and youth organizations.
We plan to add two full-time organizers to our team. More specific job descriptions will be written for each job as the organization develops 2020 plans. There is the opportunity to tailor the jobs based on the strengths of the finalists.
What we're ideally looking for in you:
At least three years of experience in grassroots, community, or union organizing with an emphasis on leadership development, ideally in a campaign setting.
High creativity and flexibility. An ability to thrive in a dynamic, goal-oriented, fast-paced, campaign-oriented environment.
Demonstrated ability and commitment to working with people from a variety of backgrounds, especially ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Ability to work remotely and be productively self-directed and personally organized.
Excellent verbal communication skills.
Experience and demonstrated success in designing and leading volunteer or member education or training programs preferred.
An ability to work some evenings and occasional weekends.
Ability to travel across the state periodically, and to twice yearly national meetings.
Bilingual Spanish-English or Cantonese-English preferred.
A passion for climate justice and addressing climate change a plus.
Knowledge of Massachusetts organizing landscape, energy and climate issues or related a plus
An aptitude for working with databases preferred.
Details: Mothers out Front is a virtual organization. You will work from a home office and the position will involve some travel across the state and twice yearly travel for staff retreats lasting up to one week. Candidates living in Quincy or Greater Boston will receive preference in the hiring process. These are full-time, exempt positions that will report to the Massachusetts Organizing Manager.
Salary and benefits: The salary range for most candidates is $40,000 to $51,500, depending on experience. Candidates with more significant relevant experience may be considered for a Senior Organizer position with a higher salary range. Benefits include health and dental coverage, a 401(k) plan, flexible spending plan, paid vacation, holidays, sick days, and support for remote work set-up. We offer ongoing training opportunities, a fast-paced, dynamic, supportive, and collaborative setting and we are proudly women-led!
Timeline: We plan to start the interview process in December 2019 for with the hope that new hires will start in February 2020 or soon after. Our interview process involves a phone interview, video interview, writing exercise, reference calls, and an in-person interview for candidates who continue to advance through the process. We also have a commitment to building up a sizable and diverse candidate pool before moving applicants to the final interview stages, which means there may be a delay in getting back to you. Our hope is that our process allows us to make the best possible decision and for you to learn more about us and appreciate your understanding if there is a delay at any point. We will do our best to keep you posted on your status throughout the process and ask that you stay in touch too.
