Job Title: Advocacy Fellow
Reports to: National Advocacy Director
FLSA Status: Part-time (under 20 hours/wk), Non-Exempt
The Community Justice Action Fund (CJAF), a project of Tides Advocacy, is a nonprofit organization building power for and with communities of color to end gun violence. We were formed by activists and survivors of gun violence to help support and empower communities directly impacted by violence. CJAF focuses full-time on building power and infrastructure to end gun violence in communities of color. We do this by creating organizing and communications strategies that engage and empower communities that are most impacted by gun violence.
Position Summary:
The Community Justice Action Fund seeks an Advocacy Fellow to assist with its advocacy, organizing, and digital fundraising efforts. This is a paid internship scheduled to begin as soon as possible.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
· Track state and federal legislation to address gun violence in communities of color.
· Compile and develop draft legislation to support legislators working to address gun violence in communities of color.
· Support direct partner organization engagement and coalition building efforts.
· Support conduction of national trainings, webinars and outreach conference calls to address gun violence in communities of color.
· Develop press releases and talking points to support policymakers working to address gun violence.
· Support content development and delivery for social media and digital engagement to address gun violence.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
· Attend external meetings and events, tracking media and pending legislation.
Education and Experience:
· Candidates must have prior experience in community and grassroots organizing
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
· Understanding of legislative and advocacy processes.
· Strong research skills, able to take initiative on time-sensitive matters.
· Intermediate skill level in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook as well as Google Suite, including Google Calendar, Google Docs, and Google Sheets required;
· Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills – verbal communication, written, analytical skills, including proofreading skills;
· Must be a self-starter with the ability to take initiative, be able to work independently, and be a team player.
Organizational Relationship:
· The Advocacy Fellow will report to the National Advocacy Director and will work collaboratively with staff, contractors, vendors, and other partners on a weekly basis.
Work Environment:
