MoveOn is a diverse and vibrant community of millions of people working together to create progressive change in America. We are an innovative campaigning organization that supports people throughout the country to take action through driving impactful campaigns that influence the behavior of people and institutions, the outcomes of elections, and expand the realities of what's possible. We organize to challenge entrenched power, while pursuing economic, racial, and social justice and a vision of a country in which everyone can thrive.

MoveOn has a particularly important role to play in the Trump era. We are working to defeat Donald Trump and the GOP in 2020 by building a powerful, multiracial, and economic populist movement that will give voters something to vote for, not just against—and we're also working to defend communities that are on the front lines of Trump and GOP attacks, including immigrants, people of color, the LGBTQ community, and women. In service of that mission, in 2019, 2020, and beyond, MoveOn will drive impactful, movement-connected, multichannel, nimble campaigns aimed at impact.

MoveOn's new Manager of Strategic Member Communications will be a senior communications strategist who is the CEO of making sure MoveOn is telling a consistent and compelling story to our members through our subscription and one-to-one communications, and then to potential members and the broader public through our external communication channels.

Responsibilities:

  • Build on and maintain an election-year narrative that considers available research and guidance, meets our context, serves our long-term goals, engages current and potential members, and has been engaged by key internal stakeholders.
  • Create a message framework that provides specific guidance for how to apply our meta-narrative to all communications channels--using short and long-form written, visual, and video content types--and to issue-specific campaigns.
  • Create a process to monitor content streams across all our high-speed and high-volume channels (member and public facing) and moderate content for accurate messaging, duplicativeness, tonal consistency, volume, etc. in service of our 2020 election year campaign goals.
  • Serve as an editor for any draft content purposed for email, mobile, social and other member-facing mediums, and serve as owner of the member messaging calendar.
  • In rapid response and proactive scenarios, variously lead and support narrative-advancing content generation including collaborating with our creative, social, and media teams and other content producers.
  • Maintain the homepage of the MoveOn website with current content that models implementation of our narrative.

A successful candidate will:

  • Enjoy staying abreast of political news, cultural news, movement news, and will combine those with member-listening and MoveOn's programmatic and campaign priorities to calibrate our message as necessary.
  • Be able to keep a birds eye view, sitting in on all regular comms and campaign strategy meetings to participate in both the generation and application of new messaging.
  • Be willing and able to build relationships and work across teams, understanding that part of their job is to successfully organize internal team members.
  • Develop and apply our messaging in a way that motivates our 5 million members, 500K-1M of whom are interacting with us in a given week, to take action, while appealing to, drawing in, and engaging potential members.
  • Ensure that our campaigning maintains a long-term narrative arc accessible to our target audiences that is rooted in values and political analysis but is translated and applied contextually for each situation, including shifts in strategy.
  • Have a strong attention to detail and a commitment to error-free work.
  • Be able to combine messaging research and analysis, creative instincts, and performance data.

Required skills and experience:

  • Passionate writer able to write and edit material quickly and persuasively.
  • Experience leading communications for local campaigns or mid- to senior-level experience in a cross-functional role at a national campaign.
  • Good marketing sense with a penchant for developing sticky messages and slogans.
  • Ability to multitask and manage projects in a fast-paced, changeable, and virtual environment.
  • At least two election cycles of campaign or political communications experience.
  • Willingness to work collaboratively with and coach others to develop messaging and written, graphic, video and other content.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences and write quickly and in a compelling manner about multiple topics.
  • Experience in a rapid response media environment.
  • Experienced manager of teams and complex processes.
