The Metropolitan Museum of Art is seeking a Senior Marketing Manager to join the External Affairs team in New York City.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

The Senior Manager, Marketing will develop and execute a comprehensive museum-wide marketing program that promotes The Met as an institution to its multiple audiences, and also promotes a wide set of individual areas to specific audiences. 

As the senior marketing leader for the Museum, the Senior Manager will build both institutional and project-specific marketing strategies and campaigns in partnership with department leaders across The Met, and also with managers within External Affairs – including media relations, email marketing, social media, government relations, and employee communications. 

The Senior Manager of Marketing reports to the Chief Communications Officer and the Vice President of External Affairs

The Senior Manager manages two types of marketing programs: institutional Met marketing that promotes a combination of Met activities and the institution's brand ; and initiative Met marketing, that promotes individual programs and revenue activities. As The Met is a complex institution with over 50 departments, the Senior Manager and the marketing team provide services for a variety of internal "clients" – including Exhibitions, Visitor Experience, Education, Digital, Development, Membership, Retail, and Restaurants.  For each individual program or revenue unit the Marketing manager is responsible for developing a marketing strategy, in collaboration with the relevant departments, to support program/revenue objectives, and working with The Met's Design team to develop visual tools to realize these goals . 

The Manager will be responsible for a range of on-going projects including:

  • Development and implementation of a museum-wide strategic plan for marketing
  • In partnership with Design, ongoing stewardship of The Met brand via ensuring that all touchpoints reflect the Museum's mission, strategic objectives, and the overall level of excellence that is expected of the Museum
  • In partnership with Design, development and maintenance of a system of interconnected marketing channels, both traditional and online, for on-site, external, and digital outreach
  • Development and application of a promotional messaging system that reflects the Museum's brand voice, provides consistency, and supports individual program and revenue objectives
  • Oversight of the Museum's advertising agency – which includes development of a comprehensive creative and media plan that provides always-on support for the Met brand, and also supports individual programmatic and revenue activities
  • In partnership with the Revenue group's Data and Analytics team, development and ongoing review of a range of KPIs that measure overall brand health, visitor demographic data, and the effectiveness of general and individual marketing programs
  • Management of all tourism outreach, including the Museum's partnership with NYC & Company

Finally, as the ambassador and evangelist for the brand and Museum marketing efforts, the Senior Manager will work in close partnership with all programmatic leaders to enable each of these leaders and their departments to realize their programmatic objectives with respect to audience size, perception, and overall public image.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  • Manage the Marketing department's senior writer and two marketing associates
  • Supervise the Tourism Manager
  • Partner with leaders across the Museum to develop, a marketing program for each area's specific function
  • Supervise the Museum's advertising agency in development of strategy and campaign execution
  • Produce What's On, What's On Today, tourism publications, the Museum's annual report, and additional on-going publications
  • Manage the advertising agency and Museum staff in development and execution of media planning and buying on digital, print and social platforms
  • Partner with leaders of media relations, email marketing, social media, and government relations
  • Monitor and report on KPIs
  • Manage a range of special projects on an as-needed basis (e.g., introduce new restaurant operator, recruit new volunteers, support new speaker series)
  • Other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience and Skills:

  • 10 plus years of experience in developing effective marketing strategies and campaigns, employing a wide range of marketing tools, including paid media in print, digital, broadcast and outdoor, email marketing, and social media
  • Strong management experience of a wide range of marketing professionals
  • A keen understanding of how social media and digital marketing tools can be used to champion the brand, share information and collect insights.
  • Strong collaborator who understands the complexity of working with multiple leaders, creative teams and navigating their diverse interests and goals
  • Experience working directly with senior leadership
  • Demonstrated track record of effectively communicating and promoting significant organizational and cultural change at a complex institution or organization
  • High level of attention to detail and consistency
  • Outstanding personal communication skills
  • Must be a skilled writer and editor
  • Ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines and juggle multiple projects
  • Experience directly or indirectly managing staff in a detail-oriented, team–based, and deadline-driven environment
  • High degree of professionalism, flexibility, and audience -focus
  • Ability to implement marketing campaigns, measure results and adapt strategies for success  
  • Love of arts, culture, and/or New York City
  • Non-profit or arts and culture marketing experience a plus
  • Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, Communication, Marketing or related liberal arts area
  • Strong background in project management
