Marketing Associate
The Mission: Higher Ground Labs is a start-up accelerator and venture fund for progressive, political technology. Founded by Obama alumni Shomik Dutta and Betsy Hoover — and backed by investors like Reid Hoffman, Ron Conway, and Chris Sacca — HGL has invested in 36 companies, many of which have become integral components of the progressive political tech ecosystem. In 2018, our companies reached 5,000 campaigns and 50 million voters. Today, every Democratic Presidential campaign uses at least three HGL companies. Our portfolio collectively serves 6,000 campaigns and causes, state parties, national political committees, and labor unions on work ranging from data to disinformation, from relational organizing to opposition research. But impacting elections and building long-term progressive infrastructure does not happen overnight. Our work centers around the thoughtful deployment of for-profit capital, private-sector business rigor, and user-centric innovation. We need to spread the word about HGL and our incredible portfolio companies, and we need your help!
The Role: HGL is hiring a Marketing Associate. This person will own and execute all outbound communication streams -- social media, email newsletters, website, blog, and stakeholder communications. The political narrative is changing by the hour. Campaigns are using technology in new, creative ways this cycle and HGL has a role in making the political community aware of those shifts. We have an opportunity to raise our profile as an organization and shape the industry for the better in the months and years to come.
The Marketing Associate will focus on doing just that. This person will work closely with every member of the Higher Ground Labs team, owning some of the most critical aspects of our success. The role will focus on these key functions:
Social media, email program, webinars, website and blog 60%
Stakeholder and list management 15%
Stakeholder Communications 15%
Brand management 10%
The Fit: We are a start-up ourselves, operating in a fast-paced and constantly evolving environment. Team members at HGL wear multiple hats, collaborate closely, and have the autonomy to pursue new ideas. We are seeking a self-starter who is a strong writer and detail oriented. This person should be creative, a strong team player, and have a demonstrated passion for and interest in Democratic politics. If you have a design or brand marketing background that is a plus but certainly not required. The ideal candidate is hungry for growth opportunities and thrives when given responsibility. A good fit would have:
At least 2 years of social media management experience
Familiarity with Wordpress and Mailchimp
A writing sample
Optimism about the role that technology can play in bettering our politics
Salary: $55,000-75,000 (commensurate with experience and location) + benefits
Location: San Francisco or Los Angeles or Chicago
